engine removal
« on: 04 June 2009, 22:55:48 »

ok i plan to swap my engine thats in my car for another one with half the miles on it.
what i want to know is how to go about the engine removal  as ive never dont it on a rear wheel drive car before .
obviously the radiator and pipe work needs to be removed  but am i best to remove the engine and box together or just remove the engine itself ?

is it a case of disconnect everything undo the engine mount bolts and the bolts connecting it to the gearbox and  some lifting and wiggling?

i would be grateful of any advice as many of you have done this before

once its out i will post another thread about clutches and head gaskets and 3l cams  :)

Remove Cats, undo box or prop shaft depending on whether you remove with box or not...remove multiram, airbox and radiator/s...will be able to get to drivers side engine mount nut to undo...

Undo the pipes holding engine in place, undo passengers side engine mount nut from underneath (or with a little persuasion from above by bending the ABS/TC unit heatshield, undo gearbox mount bracket if removing with engine...jack up gearbox to help it over subframe as you pull it out...undo waterpipes at back of engine as it comes out...

On auto there are also 2 pipes carrying ATF to (I think from memory) the steering pump??

Removal is made easier and less likely to break something by removing scuttle first :y

I have always removed with gearbox still in situ...as said only tip I can suggest is to jack up the box to help ease it over the front cross member (there are 2 torx bolts that stick out at the bottom of the box that are tricky to get over) and remove the scuttle to help avoid the lump damaging it...

Oh and probably worth removing the bonnet just to avoid leaning on it and cracking the bottom of your windscreen  ;D

You will probably also have to get your aircon degassed before starting as its illegal to let the gasses out into the atmosphere (go to jail, do not pass go and all that)
