Trouble removing ignition key
« on: 06 June 2009, 17:41:45 »

I recently bought a 2.0l auto estate. I have had a couple of occasions when I have been unable to remove the key. I used the maintainance guide to overhaul the barrel. All seemed well, until today when I had the same problem. I started the car, put it through the gears, back into park and the key came out. So is the problem the car not sensing that the car is in park? A switch problem maybe?

Hmmm, I would have thought overhauling the barrel would have sorted it, perhaps it could be some kind of link between the gear shift & the lock. I would say you may have a lot of wear on the lock, and perhaps a new barrel would sort it, but that is a guess. I feel sure someone here will know, and this post will bring it to the top if nothing else.

I now have a facelift auto and the only thing I've noticed about the ignition is that I can only take the key out when it's in park.

It's not something as simple as that, is it?

There is a little solenoid on the bottom of the lock barrel which prevents the key coming out in gear.

I suspect the switch gets jammed so that this is always energised. You can remove the cowling around the steering column and remove the 2 pin electrical connector from the solenoid to get you out of trouble if the key refuses to come out (actually, this prevents it from turning fully back to the "off" position).

Thanks for your replies. I understand that the key wont come out unless it is in park.

Is it possible that the sensor (there must be one) that engages when the gear shift is set to 'park' is not making proper contact. This would presumably mean that the solenoid would be permanantly energised?

Also, if I remove the 2 pin electrical connector from the solenoid permanantly, will this throw up further problems? Or should I only use this in extremis?

Thanks
