V6 Nightmare - Still Not Over
« on: 07 June 2009, 19:41:38 »

Ok a little help if you can.

Went out on a drive yesterday with no issues did about 30 miles round trip. Got up this morning and decided to go on another drive out to Doncaster.

On way to fill up with gold liquid the engine management light flickered. Filled up and set off no problems. Half way there and eml was permanently flashing. The faster I went the more the light stayed on and when I slowed down it flashed more. It did this all the way to where I was goint.

Once there I checked all connections and the only thing I noticed was that the exhaust from manifold/downpipe sounded louder as if something may need tightening. Set off back and other than a little power loss at bottom end at set off there appeared no issues. Half way home on the A1 I would her up to overtake a few lorrys before joining m18 and light went off. This stayed off for around 10 miles then came back on when cruising at 30.

This then stayed on the rest of the way home. Ive done a paperclip test and come up with the following code::

12
16
31

Im wondering if these may have been caused by the exhaust coming loose or if it may be something else as like I say she drives great and definatly had no hestiation on the motorway  :-?

Sorry to hear it's reared its ugly head again!

As for codes, 12 is start of sequence and 31 is no RPM signal. Did you have the engine running when you did the test?

Assuming not, 16 is all you have to go on, which is ' Knock Signal Circuit 1'.

To do: Replace brake discs and pads; adjust already replaced shoes; check for leaks in oil cooler, cambelt area, crank seals, sump, dipstick; replace osf door; replace a tyre; clean, MOT.

Ok so I can rule codes 12 and 31 off my list and just worry about code 16 then.

Where is the knock sensor on the 3.0 MV6 then. Is it the one situated below the oil filter housing??

There are two I think, and I don't know where they are. But I do remember seeing somewhere that identified their locations... can't find it now though.

I don't know if/how a faulty knock sensor would cause problems.

Check the wire to the drivers side knock sensor.

Sensor sits behind the alternator.

The connect for it is mounted on the cable tray on the front of the cambelt cover.

Follow the wire from the connector and check its not getting damaged by the aux belt.

As already mentioned, code 16 is Knock Sensor 1, which (according to Autodata) is located on the passenger side of the engine (red dot in image below).

So ... you're back to square one! Which side? :-/ You can either follow 20watts advise and go to the passenger side for No1 knock sensor or follow MarksDTM's and go for the driver's side.

Lol, Vx are far more sensible than autodata....and hence the sensors are on the same side as the associated cylinder...hence Lambda 1 and Knock 1 are on the same side as cylinder 1.
