Another new guy question
« on: 09 June 2009, 21:08:28 »

I think i will be giving up on my V6 with abs ecu problem..been quoted to much money to repair it..so i have been looking at other cheap omegas..One states the car has an EGR valve fault, it is driveable but whilst driving, the ECU light comes on and goes off intermitently its a gls dti..Any ideas??? Also another says that the auto box has a fault it will not hold itself on a hill you need to use the brake any ideas on this fault...sorry to ask but i done my money on buying the first omega and finding out thats its going to cost more than the car is worth so have little funds to buy another hence looking at cheaper options and maybe make one goos one out of the two..Any advice guys?? cheers again Ali

ABS ECU fix should be less than £150 in parts and a couple of hours to change ... is it REALLY worth buying a car you know nowt about, and trying to sell a faulty one, for the sake of £150 ???

Give BBA Reman a ring on 01634 687222 and discuss the problem with them. They sorted my old 2.5 miggy out and it took less than a week  :)

Have you had a look though the parts for sale section in the forum? There are a few breakers on there now and you might be able to pick up a secondhand ABS ECU.

Post up your location and someone might be close to you who could lend a hand getting it fixed.

To do: Replace brake discs and pads; adjust already replaced shoes; check for leaks in oil cooler, cambelt area, crank seals, sump, dipstick; replace osf door; replace a tyre; clean, MOT.

But as Entwood has posted, it won't cost you £550 if you do it yourself. I've never done one, but by all accounts is more fiddly than difficult.  :y

2nd hand abs ecu around £40 (look for same part nş, model and year).  Awkward to swap due to lack of space but well doable with patience.

To change an ECU all that is required is to unplug, remove, refit replacement, plug the replacement in.
The hardest part is usually getting access to the ECU. Some are easy, others not so easy. I can't remember where the ABS ECU is but it shouldn't take more than an hour or two to replace.
You could save a lot of hassle and expense by getting a good secondhand unit off a breaker and either fitting yourself or enlisting the help of another member.

It's a great feeling when it's all back together and working too.

On V6s they're all the same mate!! How can you quote times to swap if you can't remember where it is?? ;D  :-?

I meant ECUs in general, not just the ABS ECU.
I know where the engine one is, gearbox, and airbag but not the location of the ABS ECU. And Entwood said max two hours for the job so I guess I based time on that. Sorry for the confusion.

If you're putting your own ECU back on or an ECU from another car of the same spec ie V6 & year, then it doesn't need to be re-programmed. It's new ECU's and those from a completely different car than need to be programmed/Tech II'd  :y

When I did Estate abs ecu got one same part nş from same year/model.  Straight swap, worked as should with no need for Tech2  :y

All the ECU needs to know is Engine Size, and Auto / Manual.

2 seconds to program with a tech2 or "My Naff Code Reader".

As said, if using your own, it will be fine
If using a different 2nd hand one, it will work, no lights, but wont be quite right - reprog fixes this

if using a brand new £400 Ecu like mine had, then it will have NO config, so wont work until programmed.  Can / Will also cause other issues like the car stalling / idleing badly when cold!
