Still got oil leak opinions, advice, help needed....
« on: 09 June 2009, 19:08:49 »

Following on from my last posts regarding the oil leak..My hubby fit new cam covers (following the fab guide on here) everything was very clean and dry and the breather pipes were clean.
Unfortunately the leak is still present :(
There seems to be a funny smell after a run ..almost like a "hot oil" smell...
Was reading a few posts and wondered if the oil cooler could cause these symtoms  :-/
Thanks in advance

The smell you described will remain despite the gasket job: the leaking gaskets have leaked on the exhaust manifolds and the oil will still be stuck on them. YOu might get some of it washed away but time will do the job.

Someone will correct me, but I assume that the oil cooler would not leak oil outside?

Oil cooler itself will leak oil into water but there is external pipework and unions that could leak oil externally!

I stand corrected  :y

That was my idea that the cooler itself does not leak oil but pipes can leak.

But it turned out that the gaskets weren't leaking after all..everything was very clean and dry no leaks at all from there....Bit miffed really but at least he managed to do do the plugs while it was in bits :)...Don't really want to send it in to a garage to find the fault but with only 60,000 on the clock it's worth finding and curing :)

Could be oil cooler union pipes. Just found a leak on mine and replacing the washers on the unions seems to have cured it.

Remove all the plenum and inlet and inlet bridge and you will be able to see the oil cooler plate and union bolts. Mine had oil in the recess around the union bolts and this was what was causing the burning oil smell. :y

If it is still dripping oil then you  best bet is to clean off all the old oil with gunk or neat traffic film remover and blast with the garden hose.
With luck you will be able to see where it is running down.

the only way to sort the leak is to use an engine cleaner, eg jizer or gunk then jetwash and allow to dry . When you park up place old newspaper on the floor and look for any telltale drips to indicate where its from . ps wish yoy would change your profile pic as i find it very hard to concentrate on what im tiping lol

I agree with the above suggestions that this could be the residue of the cam cover oil leak still burning off. ;) ;)

I had the same for some 3 months, with a hot oil smell continually coming from under the car (where of course the oil had accumulated), especially when stationary after I had replaced the cam covers.  It has now all burnt off, and the smell has gone. :y :y

Thanks for the advice guys...I dont think the leak was coming from the gaskets because everything was so clean.....I think the best thing to do is clean underneath and try and see where it is coming from :)

Lol....we have done that trick with a big piece of cardboard  underneath but with it having a "tray" underneath it collected in there first and then dripped onto the floor so we couldnt really identify what the cause was..
