Alarm/Power Sounder
« on: 17 June 2009, 22:29:20 »

What noise does the power sounder alarm make.
Is it repeated, single tone mechanical sound of a "not quite tight" horn fitted to sheet metal ?
Somewhere between a BEEP and a PARP ? (::) Sorry, that's the best I can come up with)

It's just gone off now for no apparent reason and it's done it in the car park at work occasionally in the last couple of weeks.
I got to the door within 15 seconds of it sounding and there were already 3 neighbours outside, which is a good thing if there was some wrong doing happening, but not if I meet them again at stupid o'clock in the morning for this same issue.
It's the same sound I get when the alarm goes off, eg when I lift the bonnet with the alarm set.
Just trying to work out whether I have a power sounder issue.
Can the alarm be switched off until I sort this issue ?

IMHO your best bet is to disconnect the power sounder .. its a 10 minute job, ... this will do 2 things .... if its the PS thats causing the problem . ... the problem will go away .. if the problem still exists .. then its not the PS.....

To disconnect the PS .... wipers off (2 nuts), scuttle off ( one screw, several fasteners under rubber) PS is then visible under the scuttle drivers side, either undo the single nut to enable you to take the whole thing out, or just unplug it. It MIGHT make a lot of noise when you unplug it. so have some cloth to wrap it in !! :)

Don't even need to remove that much, check the guide out, it's a bit harder that way but I did it that way, even with my sausage fingers :y

A cloth? And a towel, and box with lid in the cupboard at the back of the garage with the door shut and hide in the house for 15 mins while you wipe the blood and loosened ear wax from your ears. Not many thieves with hang around with that row going on. Makes your ears buzz its that loud. Woowoo Woowoo Woowoo on mine. Nothing like a normal car horn.

If you stuff a cloth actually into the speaker orofice it really does quieten it down .. :)  mine only ran for 5 minutes on disconnection .. mainly 'cos the batteries had gone  .. I was getting the 4 "chirps" on a regular basis .. and the occasional false alarm ... new PS sorted it out  :)

If the PS is more like a siren then it's not that. The sound I get is like an ordinary "Beep, Beep" type car horn that is attached to sheet metal and the metal is resonating with the vibration.

Would expect a siren type. Mine also has a moped style horn looking thing sat next to it iirc.

Yeah, Moped type horn, vibrating very slightly on sheet metal. That's the sound it makes. :y

Mind you, it's a darned loud Moped horn. Had three neighbours out before I got there, and I was there literally within 15 seconds.

Yeah, sorry, now you mention it, think i've heard it. I think..... memory fails me again. When i first got the car maybe, its certainly rather pathetic in comparison to the power sounder.

So is it the case that the car alarm is the moped horn, and the power sounder is there only as a back up if the battery is disconnected? As it has its own power source obviously.

Never really played with it to see to be honest. Only dealing i have had with it is false alarms on start up and siren sounding.

So above being true, is the alarm being genuinely activated? As opposed to p sounder having a fit all on its own. Would suggest bonnet switch if so? Maybe unplug or tape it down and see if it behaves...? Or bend the bracket up to meet the bonnet.

As I understand it ......  :( ... under NORMAL conditions .......

Normal alarm is the horn beside the PS going BEEP-BEEP-BEEP

Power sounder siren activates when battery disconnected illegally.

HOWEVER,

when power sounder internal batteries start to fail they can send a false signal to the ECU and the normal alarm is triggered instead. The PS should give warning of impending failure by 4 silly chirps either on startup or shutdown of engine.

Mine only started to do these chirps 2 weeks after the intermittent false alarms started .... I was faffing with bonnet switches, turning of the movement alarm thinking there might be a large moth inside etc etc ... as soon as the chirps sounded I was off to get a new PS  ... problem solved .. :)
