can old fat man change heater matrix
« on: 21 June 2009, 17:48:38 »

Well i have just sat and looked through 251 posts looking for a way to change the heater matrix and i am in a quandary as what to do ,do i take the easy route, and cut the side of the dash , or do i spend a couple of days and do it without any damage, my instincts tells me to stop being soft and get it done correctly , but my 21 stone bulk says don't be stupid you fat old man .I have seen the pictures in one post where the side of the dash has been cut away, but i haven't seen a photo when everything is back in place, is it almost invisible or does it look like a bad bodge job, there is only me as one post says it took him and some help 2 DAYS to remove and replace the matrix, and he still had to damage something, i have a Haynes Manuel ,but again people on hear don't seem to agree with a lot it has to say and so i am reluctant to trust it, again any help would be much appreciated , which ever way i decide to go if anyone wants i will take pictures as best i can , i do however have loads of time and quite a good selection of good quality tools, that i should think are well up to the job, my fat old body however is another matter, i  wait for input on this matter--JK

This is how it finished up for me:

You can see a ripple in the vinyl where the backing is no longer supporting it, but basically that flap just sits there, no probs.

It is a pain, access-wise, grubbing about in the footwell, and took me quite a while (most of a day) even this 'cheat' way.  I am dead slow at all car jobs though.  I am not especially young or slim either. ;D

Can I get to the heater matrix if I go through the middle pannel? or how do I do it.?

Apologies to the purists who may consider my approach a bit barbaric.

I have just had a great offer from ghost driver to tell me he is willing to help me change the matrix, very nice offer and thanks for that ,it is much appreciated .The photo of the finished job looks very good to me ,have you any photos of the cuts you did, and what you had to do to get the matrix out, the more pictures and help that i receive will help immensely in deciding the route i will take, plus it seems someone else has the same problem, is this a common fault with the omega?, if so it might help a few people out--thanks again -JK

Just spent 3 hrs on the heater matrix job and i still can't see the matrix , so after a few swear words and cut fingers and an increase in blood pressure ,i have decided to go for the cutting method , the finished job of the cut method does not look as bad as i thought, especially after 3 hours, and still cant see anything, this made the pictures of the cut job look even better than it did before, and i am convinced now that this is the way to go for me, will update with progress reports---JK
