Hesitation, difficult starting....
« on: 21 June 2009, 17:34:46 »

Ok so now I think I've found why I got my 3.0 Elite Manual so cheap. Coupled to the fact it has a short MOT and the baffles in the exhaust have gone, another problem reared its unwelcome head today.

Took a trip to Christchurch down the dual carriageway, no problems on the way up. However, on the way back I was cruising along at about 65 (heavy traffic) with the cruise on. All of a sudden she starts hesitating, then stops a couple of seconds later. Few more seconds it happens again so I whack the hazards on and pull over into a convienently placed layby. As I come to a halt the dash lights come on and the engine dies

My first though was a vacuum leak as I was using cruise so I did a quick check of all the visible hoses but nothing seems amiss. Anyway after a couple of minutes looking for the cause nothing appears to be out of place so I carry on. 5 miles down the road and the traffic comes to a halt before the roundabout, there I am crawling along (car not liking it due to the baffles) and I get the same hesitation/powerloss, then the engine dies again. I restart and after a couple more seconds it goes again, this time I manage to pull over to the side. On trying to start up again I find it doesn't want to. It'll crank, catch and then die.

Now at this point I am now thinking fuel starvation or possibly the baffles are causing an issue.

I get her started again and on exiting the roundabout go to full throttle, as I do this and get to about 6k the EML comes on but still revs up to the limiter.

Just wondering what on earth can be causing this? I'm going to try seeing if any code is stored if I can find a paperclip but just thought I'd throw it out to you for some second opinions.

While I'm here another question:

It was my understanding that Elites (and those with Xenons especially) had headlight washers fitted? How come mine doesn't? It does have Xenons.

Thanks

Might be good to give it a srvice, Ie plugs air, oil and fuel filters. you might get code 19 with the paperclip test.

Indeed, never hurts to do a service.

Right paperclip test gives the following

31 - which I know is normal as engine wasn't running so we can ignore this

74 - Mass Air Flow Sensor Voltage High

So, a dodgy MAF? Any thoughts?

Thanks

Try contact cleaner on MAF plug mate  ;)  then refit plug and try again.

Well I took it for a blast earlier. It had had time to cool down. I pulled on to the dual and floored it, limiter and no EML so it seems its one of those pesky intermittant faults.

Will clean up the MAF plug and see if it reoccurs. Strange as it didn't do it on the 160 mile trip back from Redditch where I bought it from.

maf code quite often thrown before crank sensor fails from what i have read on here. Wonder if code 19(crank sensor) will be along soon...?
IME maf failure gives constant running problems, not intermitent. However the maf connection can play up and throw the code as said.

with reguards to your headlight washer jets, I'd have thought you should have them. Look at the lights and if you can see a hole directly underneath the headlight and above the bumper they've either fallen off or been pinched.

Ok, did it again today. First on the dual carriageway at 70mph so I backed off to around 60 and all was fine.

Couple of hours later, driving through Poole it starts again. Cuts out and this time I have a hell of a time starting it. It just doesn't seem to want idle properly when it does it, hunting and then dying. On trying to start it second time round I noticed a fair amount of smoke coming from exhaust.

As for washer jets, no holes, they've not been half inched, seems it never had them.

It also did it first thing this morning. Started up, reversed to turn around and the revs dropped and died.

Also on the second occasion today, once I'd finally got it started it wasn't so keen to pull away from junctions, there was certainly power loss there.
