1999 2.5td (BMW 6 pot) sluggish
« on: 26 June 2009, 08:29:37 »

can anyone point me at what would make my dad's car more spritely?

It's really sluggish on pick up - if you ring it's neck it aint bad but for a 2.5td i would expect better.

Thanks
Ian

if its a manual, chip it. They were de-tuned for Vx and its not full BMW spec power.

Oil changes every 3k help too

For once, I have to agree with Tunnie above - a bloody good service (these engines do need very regular oil changes -4.5k max, but I'd stick to 3k max), and if your gearbox is strong enough, pop a different chip in it to bring it back to BMW spec.

Does it struggle to get up to 2k rpm or is it just sluggish up to the turbo coming in around 1750 rpm?

Try unplugging the MAF and run it round the block, cured my sluggishness. I just need to find a new MAF for mine now as the take off from idle to about 1500rpm is a little sluggish unless I get the revs up a bit before the clutch lets go :P

Ive had one that was really sluggish, wouldn't even mount a kerb, after a service and the diesel Magic trick, still the same, turned out to be the MAF, fitted a replacement but only lasted about 500 miles before it all came back to haunt me again.

TBH is its already been remapped it should fly.  :y

New about the £200 mark unless you can find a breaker (I know somewhere that has a 2.5 atm ;) ) No just plug and play matey. Have you tried it with the MAF unplugged?

If it's a lot better performance wise it proves it's the MAF that's at fault ;) :y
