Ignition Key battle
« on: 01 July 2009, 09:48:32 »

Hi

small tale to tell, got in the old car last night after a pig of a commute back from the City , hot sweaty and tired!

plipped the door locks open, so far so good, then inserted the key to fire her up but it would not turn in the lock. I jiggled it and wiggled it for what seemed like ages - The car had been in the station car park all day in the blazing heat and was like a sweat box, all I wanted was to get home .

Anyway after about 10 minutes of ranting and more jiggling and wiggling of the key it finally released and I was able to start the engine.

Is it because of the heat that the barrel may have expanded and caused the problem or is their gunk in there. Or is the lock mechanism failing!

Would a squirt of WD40 help or harm ?

It also happened this morning to a smaller degree, 3 or 4 minutes jiggling and it finally allowed me to turn the dam thing.

mine gets very noticeably tighter when its been parked in the sun all day. A good squirt of wd40 and then white lithium grease helps but is not the ultimate answer as it will play up eventually. There is a guide or 2 in maintenance on removal of the barrel and cleaning etc. The tumblers can be removed re filed and re fitted. Ill get round to it one day.

Rather than using WDcrappy40 can I suggest you get hold of some 3in1 PTFE lube in a spray can. It works much better as a lube, WDcrappy is simply a water displacer.

Quite so, but it does work in MY lock, is more likely to be to hand and does a better job than some would have you beleive on here.

Reguardless its better than nout.

Your entitled to you opinion of course. I use it far less these days as i aquire the correct potions for the correct application, which is obviously more desirabale. A one product does all, albeit poorly, is always going to have short comings in certain areas.
Its a bit like dual purpose tyres. Crap at off and on road but better than road tyres on mud and Knobblies on road. Either way, better than no tyres at all.

I agree totally, I do use WD40 when I haven't got anything else even if it's just as an 'ít'll do for now'thing

Never use wd40 in any locks on cars as someone said its mostly water it dries out and any dirt/muck on your key is then transfered in to the tumblers and causes wear.
Only use GRAFITE powder good for all types of locks car/household.
Try CK grafite powder pt no 6283A
