Shaky steering wheel when braking
« on: 07 July 2009, 21:04:35 »

Looks like I found a really nice Omega but seller is saying that there is a problem with vibrations while breaking. Any ideas what might cause this and how serious the problem is?

Does it sound like a costly repair?

Could be warped disks.  Decent set from arrounf £50 a pair, plus a set of pads.

Also check for wheel bearing rumble, damaged bushes andwheels being out of balance.

A thread a while back mentioned that disks sometimes warp after plenty of use and then sat with the foot brake on in traffic jams.  So disk are worh double checking. :y

Agreed, most likely warped disks. If you can jack up the front and spins the wheels. I slight noise is fine as long as it is for the full rotation, if it is rythmic then I would suspect the disks. Can be had cheaply if you need but make sure you do the pads as well.

Also likely to be front suspension wishbones.

About £50 for a pair and you can fit them yourself with a bit of effort.

Buy OE discs! They're around £110 including pads with a Trade Club card. I've been down the pattern discs road before .... they tend to be crap!  ;) ;) ;)

If the disks were warped then you would normally feel it through the brake pedal(going up & down as you apply braking).
As for the problem being solved by fitting new drop links, i doubt it :-/ and as said would most likely be wishbones.

Hi,
I have not had this problem with my Omega thank goodness, but I did have it with a Renault Safrane.

The problem with this was perished lower suspension bushes, the Safrane equivalent of the wish bone bushes on the Omega.

I have this problem on my omega, not a lot throught the pedal, but it does try and wrench the steering wheel from my hand.  Should i be looking at discs or suspension components?

When my wishbones went I had no steering/juddering problems at all .. just very poor wear on the inside edges of tyres.

IMHO juddering when braking is most likely to be the brakes not the suspension..... but I'm probably wrong !!!

the only reason i said to check bushes was like entwood i suspected and changed the front discs and pads it made a slight improvement and became intermittant thats when i checked the lower arms and found the bushes were knackered but not the ball joints.
