2.6 still overheating.
« on: 11 July 2009, 14:16:43 »

I've had new oil cooler and new thermostat and rad switch fitted but the car still overheats. Theres no gunge on oil filler cap or dipstick so I'm stuck what to do. I gave it another flush today after fitting new rear pads but not tried it yet. the heater IS working but not as hot as it should. Does anyone think its the water pump at all?

What's your radiator like for cold spots? Could be a blockage through the core.  :-/
It wouldn't be too much work to remove the pump if you though it could be that though.

Are you loosing any water? Under the car, out of the exhaust, footwells?

What happens to the temp gauge on idle or driving? Does it reach 83 or 93 and then settle for a while? At about 98 does the fan cut in?

Could be an airlock in the system somewhere.
Were all the heater settings set to maximum heat when you re-filled the system?
That fact that your heater isn't working too well makes me think its probably that.
Coolant pump is less likely, but isn't hugely difficult to replace if it is.

Not sure about losing water yet and Yes , I put the heaters on full when refilling. I've taken it out and the temp stayed around 95 for a while then shot up again. The system was pressure tested when the oil cooler was fitted and showed no apparent leaks . I could do with a more in depth description of flushing and refilling the system on the v6 in case theres still air in . Thanks for the replies so far.

Expansion tank cap off. Run engine with heater set to max heat and fans set to max. "Burp" top hose to eradicate any possible airlocks :y

I'm having no joy with the overheating and the garage reckons its a head gasket as theres a lot of pressure through the hoses. Taking it in to check cylinders etc although he has done a block test with the blue fluid and the results didn't seem promising. I dont suppose there is a diy test out there for hg failure?

Has the car overheated at anytime? It can take ages to flush the cooling system properly to get all the oil out.

The car only overheated before it went in for the oil cooler and thats the only time. Will wait and see with the test the garage is doing on the engine.
