Drumming Noise
« on: 14 July 2009, 18:56:05 »

Have been trying to track down a drumming noise that has been driving me mad. Only at speeds between 25-30mph I get a noise that seems to come from the rear which is like you would get if you had a bulge on a tyre etc (i.e. dum-dum- dum- dum). I have inspected rear wheels and tyres (which although the Michelin Primacy's are getting low) but cannot see anything wrong. Have tried putting spare on each side in turn and testing for noise, but still there. Checked rear bearings for play at 3 and 12 o'clock but none apparent and cannot detect any roughness when wheels spun. Noise does not appear to vary when turning left or right but disappears at above 30mph and is not apparent below 25mph. Getting desperate have also checked front wheel bearings for any play or roughness but cannot find anything wrong with them.
Don't know what else to try. Seems as though something could be out of balance. Could this be prop shaft or bearing as autobox has recently been overhauled due to ATF leak (have to say though that the noise was there before)
Anyone got any ideas where to look or what to try next?

the only thing that I can think of is on the wheels. are your engion mounts all ok not that at that speed there is a vibration making the exhaust to move more than it should.

Low tread on rear tyres can be cause. Just had similar issue on my Signum, changed tyres and no drumming. Tyres had done 26000.
