What is the procedure for removing the steering wheel (1996 model) to ensure the airbag is all OK afterwards?

make sure the battery is disconnected for the entire procedure.

plus (and therefore) the ignition can't be on.


If the ECU never sees it leave, it will be fine as long it is is there again when power returns

Disconnect battery for at least 10 minutes to discharge the airbag. Unscrew the airbag from the back of the wheel and pull off gently, unplug and store safely away from any static or electrical sources. Slacken off the nut holding the steering wheel but DON'T take it all the way off. A good few thumps from behind the wheel should free it off the splines then remove the nut fully and the wheel will pull off too.

I say leave the nut on partly because if the wheel gives and flies off you could give yourself a fat lip, a black eye or knock out a tooth

Yes, scary!!   But I know what he means having taken many steering wheels off in my time, all without air bags  however!

Definately is!!! Nothing brings tears to your eyes like a 36" bakolite steering wheel smaking you in the gob when you're not expecting it

Definately is!!! Nothing brings tears to your eyes like a 36" bakolite steering wheel smaking you in the gob when you're not expecting it 

now if only you left the airbag connected, would have cushioned the blow beautifuly
