Ive just purchased today a 98 Omega 2.5 V6 CD and have problems already. Pulling away from some lights the revs flared up and the engine seems to go into limp mode and the words "automatic gearbox" are on the screen followed by the check box sign illuminated. After leaving the car for a hour or so the problem seemed to right itself, only for the same to happen again later. The box changes really jerky with this problem.

Any help would be much appreciated

First thing to do is to check the ATF fluid level.

If that is wrong all sorts of odd things happen.

as entwood has stated check you ATF.

I would pay particular attention to the state of the ATF. It sounds like to me you have contaminated ATF (water most likely) check where the breather hose is ( comes of the top of the top of the gearbox in should go into the top of the engine bay) as if its drooping down it will suck in water.

(talking from previous experiance, this happened to my gearbox)

Been out for some fuel this morning and thought id give it some beans down the duel carrageway on the way home. The car and gearbox was ok, picked up well with no messages on screen regarding "automatic gearbox" check. Still taking it back to the garage in the morning though.

defo take it back if you have only just brought it. dont let them ignore it cos the problem is most likely to get worse as time goes on.

at least i would expect them to read the gearbox codes followed buy a change of the ATF and filter.

Thanks all for the advice. As I said I brought the car without a warranty but the chap did say he would sort it out so fingers crossed for tomorrow. Not sure if the garage is able to read codes etc but as far as im concerned thats their problem and they need to fix it. Will let you know what happens.

Hi mate
As said above check your ATF level and top up if required.  Use Dex 3 ATF.
Check condition of ATF - is it redish or dirty brown? - whats the mileage on your motor?
Check breather pipe not blocked - pipe is at rear of engine (plenum) passenger side and connects to top of gearbox.

The mileage is crucial. How many has it done pls? has it done loads of towing?

It could be that the thrust washer has disintegrated - my 2.5 auto did at approx 130k despite having an oil change at 80k. It gave similar problems to those you describe. The "autobox gearbox" first came up on the display as I was leaving Cordoba and booting it up a very steep motorway. From then on it only came on intermittently and would be accompanied by a discernable thump from the gearbox but only under certain driving conditions.

You can prove it quite easily by taking the auto gearbox sumps off (and most of the oil comes out along with the pieces of the thrust washer). The gearbox oil needs changing say every 80k miles but gets overlooked as it is a messy job.

The easiest solution is to replace the gearbox with a known stronger working gearbox off a 3.0 litre Omega. Not an easy one man job.

Of course this is worst case scenario. Try the garage first!

Evening all.

My car in question has 112k on the clock with no tow bar. As far as im aware its not been used for towing.Took the car back this morning and the chap put the computer on it. Apparenty its a sensor fault which is in the process of being replaced at no cost to myself. The cars being returned to me tomorrow so I will let you all know.

I would have sworn the fault code would be 8 - Incorrect Ratio.

Hey all

Still not got motor back. Apprently its the crank sensor thats the problem. Ive been told its been replaced and the garage are running the car to make sure everythings ok.

If the crank sensor has been replaced that should be the end of that problem right? I was told that after it was replaced the car was taken on a test run and the same problem occured even though the sensor had been replaced and the car had been plugged into a computer and the fault recognised. I was told that the problems been logged with the ECU and thats why it happened again. It should clear itself.

My patience is starting to be tested now. ive had the car since last saturday and only used it a couple of times. Her indoors is complaining that she cant go shopping and ive two children that cant be run about  :-/

Crank sensor has no connection with the autobox mate they are pulling a blanker on you. if it was crank sensor you would have got the engine light come on and a code 19 logged in the ecu.  also the car would most likiley missfire and stall. also it may fail to start then start ok a few mins later.

If automatic gearbox was on the display then it is seeing a problem with the autobox. there are a numer of electrical solonoids in the box which maybe playing up. if it was low atf level it will say. autobox check level
