2.2 dti won't start ...
« on: 15 July 2009, 21:48:19 »

My 2.2 dti has started playing me up when starting from cold. When warm starts fine. It turns over but does not catch for quite a while will eventually start. I have just put diesel magic in the tank with a full tank of fuel. Since i have had the car it has always been a slow starter it starts first time but the revs drop quickly and cant pick up again. It seems slightly slugish and just to point there is a lot of carbon deposit around the turbo. Turbo is working. ANY IDEAS? Much appreciated!

Possibles:

Leaking fuel bleed off pipes
Leaking injector seals

I suspect glowplugs, but I am no expert. Turn on ignition, wait until the lights go out, turn off ignition, repeat several times so the glowplugs get warmed up, then try to start. Hope you understand that. Let us know the outcome, if it starts easier, then it's glowlugs for sure.

I know this is the normal case.. but ive tried this.. its only got 54000 on the clock , im concerned about how much black carbon around the turbo. could this be  anything to do with it ..

Not sure about the Carbon, the Diesels are an oily engine. Hope someone comes along with more experience of your problem. Sorry I can't be of any help.

I was under the impression that the DTi's didnt use the glowplugs unless it was bloody cold outside?

Even if the glowplugs were shot, it would still start on one of them engines anyway!

Like TB says, I bet its the leakoff pipes. (They were shot on my 2.5TD Omega, and it took upto 12 seconds of constant cranking - changed the pipes and it starts on the button now!)

If that doesn't fix it, have a look at the fuel filter, as im sure they show traces of black engine oil if the injector seals are leaking - which are a bit of a pain to do as you need to remove the camshaft I think, and thats chain driven.

i have changed the fuel filter but its still the same(just turns over) i did notice that the inlet and outlet pipes that clip in to the top of the filter are loose in their fitting, could it be drawing air???

Loosen the injector unions and crank it over till diesel pisses out everywhere, then tighten them back up.

If it still wont start then scream 'SHHH111TTT' and keep your fingers crossed that the injection pump hasnt gone...

Once it is going it drives fine, so dont think its pump, and if warm it starts first time  if left for more than 5 hrs it wont start again! CONFUSED!!!!!

Sorry, I was getting a bit carried away! lol! ;D

Would still suggest changing leakoff pipes, even if they look like new.

Was there any black oil in the bottom of the oil filter when you changed it?

just done the leak off pipes, a ba#####d job as it left a bit of old pipe by the injectors, so I've spent about four hours picking the old pipe out of all four, Great!!!! But its done now touch wood.
Took it out and it feels  like a different car(more responsive).it actually goes now when you press the go pedal, ive not had the car long, so i thought it was normal to be sluggish.will see if it starts in the morning fingers crossed!

Lets hope so! :y

Yes, if the pipe breaks, they can be a pig to remove. One or two snapped on my 2.5TD. Thick I used a chisel and screwdriver.
