I have just purchased my first Omega , It has its
« on: 12 July 2009, 13:33:50 »

I have just purchased my first Omega  , Downfall is I might have head gasket trouble.
The emissions light is on.
The running is missing a little, its enough to pass though to your seat when idling.
Im loosing water from the system and slight vapours from the exhaust. I cant see any signs of oil in the header tank and there is only a very slight milking inside the oil filler.
I have taken the car for dianostics, which was a keyfob tester and came up with various unidentified codes, and one that said there is trouble with number 4 cylinder.
I am still doing more investigation and I have it booked in again next week, I'll push them in the direction of pressure testing.
Are omega's prone to gasket trouble and if so is there a hot spot were they usally go.
Hope to get this sorted as soon as possible so I can go for a real cruise.
Thanks Russ

I am a newbie my self but have had omegas for over ten years, V6 tho.  Having read many threads the 4 cylinder blocks are more prone to head gasket problems but this doesnt mean to say that is the problem with yours.  A little milky residue on the oil filler and just in the filler neck is a common thing especially if the car has been sat for some time without use so dont rely on that as a sign.
Getting the codes interpreted properly will help, sorry I cant be of anymore help at the moment.  All the best with it tho and hope its less problematic than you think, Omegas are great cars and Im sure when its sorted you will be very happy.

Nice try at helping so early in your membership  :y :y :y But unfortunately the OP has a 2.2 .....  and the "tricks" in that link won't work  ... :(

Just one of those things I'm afraid .. but don't let it stop you giving your 2p's worth....   :y :y :y :y

right, is it lumpy from cold? but then smooth out?

Unscrew the header tank cap and have a sniff, smell petrol?

Also check the HBV (Heater By pass valve) its directly behind the engine, a big black circular thing with some fat pipes going into it. Check to see if that is dry/damp

How much coolant are you loosing?

yell if you need a hand or another pair of eyes - I'm not far from you.

get the fault code read first (talk to Marks DTM nicely as he works in coventry and may be able to bring tech 2 with him - much cheaper and much more accurate diagnosis!)

If you are going to a garage, try Tile Hill vauxhall, as stealers go they have always been fair to me

Cheers for the info.
The missfiring stays pretty much the same. but i have noticed that on occasion it does hold back on the acceleration.
With just getting the car im not sure at the rate its loosing water, but ill be driving it a few miles to work this week so ill be able to keep my eye on how much im loosing.
I had to put over a litre and a half in it when i first noticed it, but this might of been loosing over a long period.
Tile Hill is the other side of Coventry i think, Im still finding my feet down here. which doesnt help.
When i bought it i thought it was an ecu problem and as i got a good deal on it with 75k on the clock, i thought it would be worth the risk.
Im still not put off the model even with this happening. Im just annoyed i might not be able to go fishing for a while lol
Stay safe

if its always the same, does not suggest HG to me.

When father tunnies one failed it was letting water into the bore 4, it would start lumpy, but burn off, to run smooth. (although it had tons of white smoke out back)

As mentioned drop a PM to MarkDTM and hopefully he can read the codes for you and we can find out what the problem is  :y

cheers all,
Just had the car in the garage and they did a compression test and stuck the MOT rod up the exhuast.
Looks like the gasket is leaking water into number 4 cylinder and the CO2 reading from the exhuast is pretty high, must be the litre of water im loosing over a ten mile trip.
The good news is it hasnt effected the quality of sound from the stereo, lol
Ive got it booked in for week on monday.
Im just taking very short trips in it to work and topping up before i drive and when its cold.
