Autobox problem
« on: 17 July 2009, 17:12:40 »

Hi I need some advice.  I've only had the car 2 months and had no problems with it until today. Got the "check automatic gearbox" warning and when it sets off its behaving like a slipping clutch.  It revs up to about 2500 and just crawls. Once it gets going it seems to drive okay but you can imagine how awkward it is at junctions.

I read somewhere that the winter mode switch can become faulty and cause it to be permanantly in winter mode.  Could that be the case here.  Any suggestions are gratefully welcomed  :)

I had just the same problem johnnycboy. It happened to me within an hour of driving the car off the forecourt.

The car has now been taken back by the garage and money refunded.

Thanks Dazza. I followed your link and the bit about the breather hose potentially sucking in water makes sense as this fault has only developed since we've had some heavy rain.

I'm going to check the hose and replace the fluid.  I'll let you know how it goes.  :)

Had the fluid replaced and its made no difference. I've noticed that for the first few minutes the car drives normally then there's a thump and after that it seems as if the car is trying to pull away in 3rd gear. Once its rolling, it drives ok and I can manually select 1st but the change up to second is rough and noisy. I've also noticed that even when the box is working normally, the winter mode will not engage. Could this be somehow connected to the problem?

I'm not a mechanic and due to my job I don't have a lot of time to figure it out.  I'd be grateful for any suggestions or if anyone esle has had the same problem and could tell me what it turned out to be.

Is the car a 2.5 V6? How many miles has the gearbox done before this oil change?

Also when the oil change was done did whoever did it take off both sumps and was there any debris in them from a broken washer?

Has the fluid level been checked with the oil warm and the car level and been through the gears? There is a guide on here somewhere.
