Running Hot
« on: 06 July 2009, 16:03:21 »

Happened again today on the way back from the site.

On the way up to the EA meet (with the van) I had an incident in very slow stop-start traffic where the gauge shot up over the 100 mark... Put heater to hot and within about 5 seconds it dropped back down again. It was about 28 Celsius outside and the car had run a little hotter than normal anyway but not alarmingly.

When TB had a spin on Saturday he commented it seemed a little hotter than he'd like to see so we stuck the Tech 2 on again and read some live data and discovered that the gauge was over-reading by about 4 degrees... Happy days, I can cope with that :y :y :y

Unfortunately it started again on the way home today... Similar situation but a bit cooler outside.

Strange thing is that it's never done it before and was fine earlier in the journey when we got stuck in traffic. Water pump has only been on for about 25-30k and fluid levels all OK, with correct anti-freeze concentrate. Anyone have any ideas?

Oh... Fans all working fine too :y :y

Next coolant change, may be worth giving it a good flush through with Forte or similar.  Even if that next coolant change is sooner than you'd hoped ;D

Might be worth seeing what it is like without the burger van on the back - might be an issue with the van, eg slightly binding brake etc

Had wondered about that but doesn't appear to be... Just seems strange that it was fine for about an hour and a quarter (both ways) then started playing up :-/ :-/ :-/

Without the van it seems to run a little hot on the gauge but Tech 2 data showed that to be over reading by 3-4 degrees... I still found the lurch of the needle to the top of the gauge a little worrying! :o :o

I know sod all about pikey wagons, but know her dad's wagon had a brake problem a while back that only showed up after a few miles.

Can you remember, did the engine ecu and the instrument ecu live data readings tie up?

That would assume that I really paid attention to the data when looking over your shoulder ::) ::) ::) I was too busy sulking because you had agreed it felt a little flat :( :( :( But I do have to agree after driving yours.

I do remember that both sensors gave similar readings and that they proved the gauge was telling big fat lies in the region of about 3 or 4 degrees ::) ::) ::)

Enough to bring the actual temperature down to "normal"

Incidentally... Clearing that data doesn't seem to have solved the holding back... But the economy has improved :y :y :y

Time I changed the plugs I reckon and see what happens from there

Does it make any difference if you press the ECO button? Mine has started running at an indicated 100+ with the climate on, set at 19 degrees as always, but in ECO mode all 3 fans cut in when they should and cool it right back to 95. This is a variation on a problem my car's had for ages, blowing the aircon fuse in hot weather. Now the fuse stays intact but the system behaves as if it's blown!

Been thinking hard this afternoon whilst relaxing and examining my eyelids... Think that could well be a possibility. Both times it happened just after having to brake a little hard to come to a stop and then creeping in stop-start traffic. Could be I didn't manage to "snap" the overrun brakes off again :-/ :-/ :-/

Certainly the car doesn't get anywhere near as hot when solo, even driven with a degree of enthusiasm :y :y :y

One of the o2 BLM was way off what it should have been.  Ask me to check it again at Newent.

Right, bringing this back to the front for another look!

Been to Plymouth and back this weekend and still get this strange problem!

The brakes on the van are fine, gave them a good check and kept an eye on them, stopping and checking wheel temperatures has ruled out binding.  :y :y

Driving around without the van the temperature is perfectly stable. But, when the engine is having to work hard with the van, so uphill and accelerating, it can get very hot! Adjusting the heater to hot will solve the problem but not ideal when it's a bit warm out ::) ::) I have also had a play and I can regulate the temperature somewhat by turning off the cruise and using the accelerator to regulate speed/engine revs.

To recap, water pump and coolant are less then 18 months old (27k) and fans are all working. The only thing I didn't try was turning the AC to eco but am really confused by this one :-/ :-/
