Revs dropping out and tappety sounding on start up
« on: 21 July 2009, 20:10:30 »

Hi All,
My new 98 V6 has been trouble free so far but i have noticed the Revs drop to 500 every now and again and on initial start up she sounds very tappety it does quieten down but is still there when she warms up. Cant remember if my old one did it or not does anyone think i have or will have a problem??
Thanks in  advance

On initial start the lifters can be a bit tappy, change the oil and filter a few times in quick order (after a few hundred miles or so) and it should quiten down.  Mine's always done it but is a lot quiter now I have done a lot of short order oil and filter changes.  These engines can be a bit tappy though, shouldn't be a worry unless you have a blockage in an oilway or a lazy lifter, have an oil pressure test done to see if you have a worn pump or bypass valve that is open.  If all OK try a can of Wynns tappet treatment with a fresh oil change and filter and it should help.  It doesn't say it on the bottle but put it in with fresh good quality oil.  People will laugh when I say I use Mobil1 I'm sure but I do and it's still cheap compared to a new engine! And it does carry the GM-LL-025-A approval, so it's alright in this engine.  I only use Hengst or Mann filters, they are good, Hengst is GM fit anyway, and I insist on changing the oil every 5k miles.  I'm sure I will be laughed at for this as well.  Oh well, my old Granada managed 252,000 miles being treated like this and my Volvo was as new at 160,000 miles, so I'm happy regular changes do no harm!  Incidentally GM synthetic 5w30 is good oil and if you have access to a trade card very cheap.

Oh, and revs at 500, mine always runs at that but it is the FBW 2.6, however, a good clean of the breather and throttle body and a check of all the vacuum lines probably wouldn't hurt either.  The ICV is another place to clean on the 2.5 and while you're under there check the EGR for leaks.  Clean / change it or blank it off if it's the culprit.  You don't really need it all that much.

Request that work from any mech,  independent or dealer and youll probably see his brain go into lockdown. The icv is simple job but they probably wont be able to find it. There is a guide for cleaning breather system system  in maintenance, suggest printing it off and showing it to them, but theyll probably get all high and mighty and know better. And if they are doing your cam belt make sure they change the tensioner and idlers, not just the belt. Also ask to see they're locking kit for your engine. If they havent got one dont let them touch the car.

500 rpm is normal on these engines - they can even drop to 400! It was to comply with emissions regs in other markets (USA) where versions of the engine were also used.
