Rough as guts
« on: 18 June 2009, 12:09:34 »

2000 facelift 2.5 CDX manual estate. Recent 'all makes' major service at VX dealer. 72k miles. Not used much recently. Not had the cambelt done yet.

Suddenly running really rough - vibrating, using a lot of petrol (25mpg at steady 60 in 5th according to the computer). Wasn't sure I was going to get home.

I don't have the cash to stump up at a garage and ask them to fix it, and if there's something badly wrong it's possibly going to cost more to fix than the car's worth.

Where do I start ? (I maintain my old VW camper but this is a different kettle of fish).

Thanks for your help.

Aha ! The paperclip test.

To add to my woes, this happened on the way back from the dentist after a filling. Do I wait until the anaesthetic wears off, or do it now ?

I'm so disappointed - I'm getting 31 (no revs) with the engine off and just 21 with the engine running.

in that case, hmmmm

Suspect HT at best, or at worse (if the inteval has been ignored) cam timing

I could only reach the front left, and that was clean.

Maybe it is time to get the cambelt done

..or maybe not. My trusty Snap-On timing light is getting a reading from the middle HT lead on the left (one day I'll know what the cylinder numbers are), but not the front one on that side.

I can't physically get to enough of any of the others to try them, and can't even trace them to wherever they come from.

Maybe time to get a manual ?

The DIS pack lives at the back of the nearside bank of cylinders ie 2, 4 & 6 It's pain in the harris to get out. You need the plastic scuttle panel off from under the screen.
No 1 cylinder is front driver's side  :y

Thanks. I don't want to get it out - I'd like to be able to get the Snap-On clamp round each of the leads with the engine running. Does that sound possible ?
