manifold gasket
« on: 20 July 2009, 02:02:58 »

hi all
i have a slight blowing from the drivers side manifold to head exhaust gasket.
no its only slight as i can only here it when the window is open and its not as bad once warm.
now i am going to be driving to top end of scotland from manchester at weekend
what i am asking is .
1 is it hard to change.
2 how long will it last before fully blowing .
3 can i just nip up the nuts .
4 would you risk driving all that way like it is as i realy could do without trying to sort it before i go.

thanx nick..

Can be a real pain as the studs often shear, in which case it is head off unless you can get to it in situ. My last mig ran like it for over 2 years until it got bad enough to fail the MOT. Sheared the front most stud but that was easy to get at and fix.

As James says it could be the down pipe gasket but that was new when I replaced the manifold gasket.

Make sure is not the air pump fitted on passenger side behind bumper.
They only run when cold & when mine went it sounded like an exhaust blow.
Might be a long shot but worth checking before you start with manifold

Oh maybe some do & others don't then.
Mine has a air suspension compressor on drivers side & a aux air pump on passenger side. i think its connected to the manifold somewhere?? maybe to egr system??
Mine had a broken pipe & sounded like the exhaust manifold was blowing.   :y

Vectra Elite Estate doing good post-Omega service but still not as nice to sit in.

One last Omega on the drive, one Corsa on the lawn...maybe they'll go to a good home before too long!

Try touching the EGR pipe (with a rag it gets very hot). Mine comes loose and blows, when you touch it the noise changes. To fix it you need some PTFE tape and to tighten it up.
