Upgrading my brakes - Advice needed please
« on: 25 July 2009, 20:24:47 »

Hi.

I'm looking to upgrade the brakes on my car.

Obviously can't afford (or see the point) a hub / disc upgrade from the likes of AP, brembo, or such like.  But thought that going the route of upgrading with something like 3.2. V6 calipers & discs all round, along with braided hose maybe a good idea ?.

Anyone have any advise or thoughts on this route ?.

Properly maintained standard Mig brakes should be more than enough.
If yours are a bit tired, new discs and something like EBC "Green Stuff" pads should sort it.   :y

All the omegas after about 95 where fitted with the larger dia discs and did not change for the 3.2. you can however use upgraded pads and when you go to vx ask for police pads, they are slightly softer compound to std pads but perform much better. that is all you have to do. dont waste your money on differant calipers as they wil not give you much more than you already have. :y

can vouch for oe pads as fitted from the factory made by Jurid ( as opposed to aftermarket/trade club pads ) improved bite and feel, but are over 3 times the price.

Thanks for the advise, obviously an easier mod than I thought it would be.

I'll get some uprated 'Quality' pads then.

Cheers

HI Andy do you know if those rear vented ones would fit a elite 99 a 2.5 mini face lift?
mine are comingto the end of their life and if i could change for one of thoses, i'm thinking of taking "the beast" to Portugalnext year and damn it's hot out there and some performance in the heat would be nice :)

I can't any reason why not. Obviously you'd need the calipers to go with them.
You're not likey to see any great benefit though, standard rear solid are up to the job.

I was assuming that you were talking about front discs that you were thinking about upgrading. SORRY. I took my car to spain last year and we had 40deges and the std vx pads were more than capable. Upgrading the rears to vented discs will not improve  above your std setup.

You may also get brake bias imbalance. You'll notice the ABS system kicking in more often as the rear wheels will be more prone to lock up under heavy braking. Personally I don't see the point in making the ABS work harder for no gain.
