Need Help with Faulty Ignition Barrel.
« on: 27 July 2009, 11:54:00 »

Used my Omega on Saturday and every thing seemed fine, however just got in to it today and the ignition barrel refuses to turn. Have sprayed grease down the barrel and still it refuses to move, to not want to force it to much as i do not want the key to snap inside.

Other forums have said that due to hot weather something inside the barrel expands and therefore restricts the movement, will wait until this evening to see if anything has changed. Some of mentioned taking the barrel out complety, however i am not very confident in doing this, do you need to remove the steering wheel and airbag to gain access plus the steering lock is on?

I am currently in Germany at JHQ, monchengladbach, do not want to call out ADAC just yet if it can be dealt with a simple change ignition barrel.

Did meet new omegaowner club member here at JHQ on saturday who said he was mechanicaly minded but I did not get his name, stupid me.

I need help changing this barrel otherwise i am stuck, if this person is online and see this please respond.

Just tried keys in the ignition, with a bit of patience, wiggling of the steering wheel and a bit more force turning the key it went to position one and i was able to turn the engine on.

What a relief, will still take out ignition barrel as per instructions in the maintenance part of this forum and clean it up. Obviously a warning that ignition barrel is wearing out.

Lucky the car was stuck outside house, otherwise could of been stuck anywhere.

Well done!

When you do get into the thing and start addressing any burrs etc. on any tumblers, don't forget to look at the inside of the alloy bit that they bear against, and smooth off any areas that may have got damaged by unsuccessful attempts to turn the key.

Another thing worth checking while it's apart is whether the key still needs inserting as far as it can possibly go in order for the tumblers to be in the optimum 'unlocked' state.  There must be some sort of endstop to prevent the key going in too far, and in our case that must have become worn/bent.
