Narrowed down symptoms & changed parts.
« on: 15 July 2009, 17:03:44 »

Ok i am clear of all fault codes since changing the CS (which made the car run great for 50-100miles) but the car went back to running shite and i think it may well have been someone else thats gone tits up!

Symptoms:

Misfires on pick up, pulling away and clears half way through rev range.

Pops violently down the exhaust when tooting along probably more noticable when cold.

If left to idle, it starts to go crazy and hunt and all sorts, longer its left the worse it gets untill the ICV kicks in and fast idles i assume to keep it going.

I am not so sure its now a sensor that the ECU uses as there are no fault codes now. If your had these symptoms and where 99% sure its not a sensor what would you think it is?

It sounds to me that its not burning the fuel its getting correctly as its popping down the exhaust and choking itself when left to idle but when engine flying it runs ok.

Thanks again
Ross

I have'nt checked the fuel filter tbh, but its getting fuel through i would say, its just as thought it cant burn the fuel its being given! Dont think there is an air leak either.

AHHHHHHHGGGGGGGG oppsING ENGINE!!!!!!!!!

Still cant work out the problem, changed leads & plugs again to be sure and nothing! Car will run without misfire on wide open throttle (WOT) but anything else tripe!

The backfire took a step up just during testing also..... blew back down the air filter this time, really loud bang it was thought me dad had lost a hand!

still sounds a bit like an air leak.

What do the brakes feel like? Normal?

Brakes are fine mate no change there.

An ir leak can cause this serious of a problem? I can feel/see/hear  leak tbh but i suppose i could bite the bullet and re-do the induction pipes etc.... there is bit of strain on the ICV pipes.

One thing it does do as said is if left to idle get worse, well it also desides to start revving up when at the lights for a few seconds then back to normal!

can always try spraying carb cleaner round different bits with the engine running....when it revs from the extra power, you have found a leak  :y

found a dodgy plenum seal on one of ours a week or 2 ago using this method  :y

A possibility. :-/ Popping normally means running very lean, so could be MAF. Could equally be an air leak. Is it as bad hot or cold?

EDIT: Have you checked for fault codes?

no fault codes, and its more noticable cold tbh!

Ordered some parts to re-do the induction so im sure there will be no leaks

I think its fixed! Changed some of the induction parts i wasn't too sure about and a new filter and the misfire seems to have vanished! Still have some popping on overburn but i think there is a split in the downpipe causing this! Finally!
