Steamy exhaust - head gasket?
« on: 30 July 2009, 19:09:24 »

Right. After the oil cooler change (and associated debacle), reassembled, bled the cooling system (properly this time ;) ).

It's got an ever-so-slightly lumpy idle, but whenever I put any throttle on, I get steam out the exhaust - took it for a very short run, and it's got white smoke even when moving.
When I rev the engine with the coolant cap off, it looks like there's some bubbling in the expansion tank. My sense of smell is non-existent, so I can't smell if there's exhaust fumes in there or not...

Am I right to fear the worst?  :-?

I take it its a V6 with you changing the oil cooler. Is the car using water and have you tried letting it tick over with the cap off and heating on hot to get any air out of the cooling system.

Now, I considered this - after having not done a thorough job of bleeding it last night, it was suggested.

So today before taking it out I bled i through as much as I could, I'm going to try some more tomorrow to make sure - cap off, heating on hot, and burping the pipes. But I'm more or less resigned to it being HGF, with the bubbling in the expansion tank, and steam.

If it was only the steam, I'd put it down to the wet weather while the car was in pieces - had put towel in the inlets and front banjo pipes, but I figured a bit could still have got in - but it wasn't clear after ten minutes ticking over, and five minutes driving.  :(
