« on: 31 July 2009, 22:02:14 »

sorry to ask but please could you guys please help me with a problem i have with my motor.

the first snag you cant help me with and thats a hubby who is shite at describing and telling all about faults with the car!

here's tonights conversation for you......

"hunny the car keeps dying on me"
"ok babe in what way? is it idling ok?"
" its idling good, but it died today and wouldnt start until i turned everything off in the car"
"Every thing :-/?"
"the radio, satnav, heater, lights. When did you last change the battery"
" oh right, i didnt change the battery you did you remember halfords it died outside the store while i was food shopping......."
" oh yeah i remember, how long ago was that?"
" bout 3yrs ago, what make you think it could be that babe?" ( thinks to herself he has got a good point but i doubt it)
"it seems battery related but........."
" but ........ bl@@dy what now"
" the sterio is makeing a wherrrring noise its like you can hear the alternator and the pitch increases with the speed of the engine"
" oh right so what your saying is when you increase the load on the engine the noise increases?"
" yes hunny pritty much"
" ok no worries babe ill have a look tomorrow ill check the voltages on the battery and alternator as well as looking at the electrical connections and earths"
" cheers hunny but you know we are going out at 9am......."
" great  >:( did this problem start today?"
" oh no hunny it did it the otherday"
" REALLY....... did you not think to mention it to me??? "
"sorry it slipped my mind"
" anything else you wanna add or tell me"
" now that you mention it when it dies not even the hazards come on and the key fob battery is dead too"
" Great!!!!!!!!!!!!"

No you can stop laughing  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

So please could somebody remind me on....
A. how to test the voltage on the altinator?
B. what the voltage should be from the battery?
C. what else to check ...if anything?
D. what you think this problem might be..

oh and i have just looked up to see that hubby has allowed one of our pet rats to walk accross the hamerite paint lid and i now have red feet marks accross the coffee table as well as a pet rat with red painted feet! >:( >:( funny though ;D ;D ;D

Worth checking the battery terminals are still securely crimped to the wires.  :y

Another worthwhile test is to use a jump lead to earth the engine to the body/chassis to confirm it's not an earth fault :y :y

IIRCC hubby has a reasonable drive to do daily? If so I would have thought that a faulty alternator would have reared it's ugly head with a non start at some point by now, especially as he's had all the toys on :-? :-? Unless it's over charging :-/ :-/

Sounds like it could be an earth fault though, which may be good news :y :y

Did the Rover bits arrive OK?
