Second opinion on knock noise
« on: 02 August 2009, 21:27:27 »

Yesterday I changed an oil cooler on a 2.6 Elite.

The job went smoothly enough - the oil filter housing and pipe unions all behaved themselves....

Before I started the job, the owner told me he heard a ticking noise from the engine but wasn't sure what.

I immediately thought manifold gasket or follower, but, as soon as it was started, I knew this wasn't the case.

The noise seems to come from the centre of the two banks, at the top.

Would anyone else agree, this is likely to be coming from the upper cambelt idler?

We have decided to change the belt kit as a precaution anyway, as it's history isn't fully known... the job was done 20k ago, but can't be guaranteed it was the whole kit...

Everyone else agree with this course of action?

I'm thinking it's going to be a lucky escape for someone! - it made such a rattling noise at one point, that I dived for the key.
