help my car is overheating. its just started to do it. although it seems to be throwing gears and reving with no pull

can anyone tell me where to start

What engine gearbox is it? I'd start by looking around for any coolant leaks, jack the car up, have a look underneath. Is coolant coming out of the pressure cap?

 Is it actually getting hot, or just the gauge saying it is?

 Gear issue might be separate, might be related - manual or auto?
