help and Advice urgently needed : Ignition Barrel
« on: 30 July 2009, 20:08:56 »

As mentioned in a previous post (http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1248716765)

I sold the omega on Monday. Following the collapse of the ignition key housing, it turns out that the new owner had issues with the spare, and as it was engaged on the steering lock, and the barrel spinning freely, had it towed to the local garage by the AA.

The local garage took it to the nearest VX dealership.

Now, i'd told the new owner that I would be happy to continue to provide mechanical support to the car as he didn't really do maintainance himself.  I'd also said that I would be more than happy to pay for a new ignition barrel as I feel mortified that this has happenned (contrary to what chris Gixer thinks- doesn't matter any way.)

The VX stealership has come back today with the following quote: £491 for :
new barrel
new keys
recoding keys and barrel
New Barrel retaining bolt

What i'd like to ask is if there are alternatives?

Is the transponder for the ignition barrel integrated into the barrel or is it external and if so can the old transponders be used?

I was all set for the purchase of a new barrel and new ignition key blades and fobs and just swap over the transponder chips.

The car is in Reading area, and the guy who bought it is on crutches with the use of only one leg. I said that I would get this sorted as it wasn't fair on him, but we're both of the opinion that £491 is taking the piss for a car which cost him 400  :-/

Any advice greatly appreciated, as I really do want this not to go through the hands of a VX mechanic  - even If I have to pay someone on here to recode etc.

Any advice greatfully appreciated.

I had to replace my  ignition barrel recently The new barrel was not that expensive it came with a key just a basic key purely to operate the lock as far as  I could tell ,
The barrel I brought was the correct key code for rhe car if it has car pss the key number will be on there
 .
I did damage the housing taking it all apart it would not turn to the release position to get it out
All in all it cost me less £100 to sort it out  :y

I bought a new barrel which came with keys from Autovaux for about 25 quid.

I didn't bother recoding, just put the new key on the same keyring as the old one.

Not sure what the barrel retaining bolt is? I thought the barrel or housing incorporated a spring loaded latch.. :-/

Not sure what you mean by 'collapse of the housing..'

couple of thoughts, previous thread mentions a lock set from a breakers, does that not resolve the issue?

...and there is mention of a photo showing the damage, can you post it up?

Dont see the need to buy anything other than the barell and a fob from vx if you go down that route, tech2 owning members on here can do the rest as im sure you know.

If you want to send me his number i can have a look tomorrow  p.m.

Chris, if Ians can get the barrel and keys from autovox for 25 quid then that's got to be better than 25quid from a breakers anyday of the week.

I've found the complete fob and blade for 4.99 from the company that makes them, It's just a fob with a blade, not even the integrated unit - (4.99 without transponder chip or 7.99 with. - it's the original Infra Red unit where the central locking fob is separate from the key.  Its just the blade broken out of the plastic housing when he twisted it in the ignition barrel)

Your offer of having a look would be really appreciated, i'll call him tommorrow.  TBH, the first port of call is get the thing out of the maindealer's garage!

Naturally I'd pay you for your time, as I can't get to him before tuesday.  I'll give Autovaux a call tommorrow, and drop you a message if he say yes.  :y

UPDATE>>>

Just looked on Vaux World shop and they can do an ignitionbarrel and keys for £24 quid.
Will ring Autovaux as well.

You won 't need any recoding as it's only the mechanical parts that failed. Re-use the transponder chips and remote fobs from the old keys and just change the blades and barrels.

VX might be able to supply items to match the existing keys given the car pass details - or you might be able to rebuild a new barrel using the bits from the old one. Failing that change the door barrel(s) too.

PM sent

A barrel and key will only help if the existing key can be persuaded to turn the lock to Pos. 1 to remove the old barrel. Otherwise you have to drill out the shear bolts and replace the complete lock assy.

The barrel is currently spinning freely and not engaging when the key is turned from what I understand.  :-/

well, the story continues...

today I went to the new owner with a new vaux world ignition barrel and two new keys.

I swapped the transponders over, but the barrel in the plastic ring surround on the ignition barrel and she fired up.

So, I tried to get the old barrel out... eventually i had to drill and smash it out as the steering lock wasn't coming off.

When it was all fitted up, we tried the key. fine in all positions.
all lights on (albeit dim) ..but no mid! turned the ignition on, and nothing... please tell me the battery is in need of a charge!  the cl didn't want to play either.. if i knew the poor bloke was going to go through all this I'd have weighed the thing in  :(
