Hello all.

I could do with some help if you can. I have a 96 omega 2.5 v6 and i have been told i am going to need a gearbox recon. I have been quoted £750. I really dont want to scrap or strip her for parts as she is a bloody lovely drive and in immaculate condition but cant afford to fix her!!!! Please has anyone got some advise

probably cheaper to get a second hand one from one of the guys here .. have a read in the "for sale" section, you'll soon se who breaks cars on a regular basis...

cheers m8, didnt think of that, was a bit one tracked mined with the cost for a recon one. Does anyone know of a good mechanic around coventry area that would fit a gearbox for me.

Auto or manual? Got a couple of manual boxes here...

its a auto. bmw gearbox. is it a big job swopping them over???

its not a too bigger job, easier if you have serveral pairs of hands and the right tools.

i have done it outside my house on axle stands and on the 3rd time it only took us 3hrs to get it out and back in.

my old dears live in coventry where abouts are you. i can ask them which garage they use and can recommend.

Ensure with the replacement gearbox you get as much info as possible about it ( miles it has done, condition of it ( if at all possible see it working)
check the condition of the torque converter look for scoring on the shaft( this is a sign of the pump bush going) the torque converter seal ( check it not mis shaped) both of these if they fail will mean you have to take the box back out again to get them repaired. its always good if you can get a box from members on here they are a more reliable then Ebay.

also why do you need to swap the box?  Some garages will not touch an auto box - rather just swap them.  Maybe the problem you have can be fixed.  After all someone on here has probably encountered it before.  Tell us more any maybe we can help?

Thank you all for your help. As regards to jonathan's message. I was driving along the motorway at about 85, as i can onto the slip road slowing down it flashed up auto gearbox on the inboard computer, about a 1/4 mile down the road it started to judder when i put any amount of acceleration down. It change gear and still drives but judders. I pulled over as soon as i could and got towed back to minimize the amount of damage.

Thank you marie. I live in radford, coventry. I have been doing some research into garages around coventry and there is only a few that people have not moaned about!!! Not good. Some garages are quoting me £1200 to fix the problems with the car which is day light robbery.

sorry again for not getting back to your helpful words quicker. I work 12 hour night shifts and have jist done 15 on the bounce

Don't know if this is the correct advice (some one will correct me if not) but can't you try changing the fluid.
I'm sure I've read on here doing that can solve some problems that you describe..........I as I say maybe wrong, I have a manual so don't know.

If you haven't already done it you could try changing the fluid and see what happens. When was the last time it was changed?

It has full service history but doesnt ay anything about the gearbox!! thanks for the info.Ill get it checked out in a day or so and let you know!!! Fingers crossed

hi, i used to have a 2.5td that did the same thing.
i bought an ar35 gearbox out of a 3 litre petrol car, take your existing gearbox out..leaving the torque converter on the car then just changed the bell housings, and replace the new gearbox into the car. but make sure you use your existing torque converter, as its the one made for the bmw engine.
the ar35's are a better gearbox, more suitable, for handling the bmw's torque.....and obviously the bigger vauxhall engines. i'm new on here, but.....
