Brake Squeal
« on: 07 August 2009, 16:45:59 »

Hi all, I've got a very annoying high pitched squeal coming from the front offside brake. I have taken it all to bits and airlined all the dust away and copper greased metal-to-metal areas. Loads of wear left on the pads, torqued it all back up and first of all noise was reduced about 50%. After 2 days [40 miles] the squeal's back with a vengeance.
P.S. It doesn't happen when braking hard, or at speed, but its at its loudest when braking very slowly say for instance pulling up at the lights.
Any help/ideas would be appreciated.
P.P.S. Before anyone says "oem pads" they are orig Vaux fitted by main dealer as last owner was an airline pilot and had all servicing done at main stealers. I've got all past receipts.

My current set of GM pads are awfully noisy too. You could perhaps try filing a chamfer on the leading and trailing edges of the pad material but everything I have tried so far has only effected a temporary cure.

They seem to generate much more brake dust than the previous ones too.  >:(

According to receipts they were changed approx 3,100 miles ago along with pads. Appears fine apart from one very, very shallow radial scratch where a small stone may have lodged in the past on outer face.

Alloys are covered in it after a trip of about 60 miles.

Does this include the edges of the pads, try cleaning the edges(also where the pads slide into)with some fine wet & dry before adding the copper grease and also make absolutely sure you haven't got anything(even the tiniest bit)embedded in the pad :y.

Same here, although the recent heavy wet weather and 'spirited' driving, has removed the squeal for now  8-)

Thanks for all the replies......it is a really loud/embarrassing squeal and only at extremely slow speeds, so I think I'll get some some new pads and substitute them weekend.

Prob never know but if new ones are quiet then this must be the cause. And rules out other components, too. I'll post results back just in case anyone's interested and it may help future posters when "searching" to see the issue bottomed-out.

I think its the luck of the draw when it comes to brake pads, some tend to squeal more than others all the way through their working life, either put up with it or change em.I have had it in the past with my motors. :-/

I usually spend a long time when i do my brake changes and make sure everything is really clean, fettled and coated in copper grease and can honestly say I've never had brake squeal, worth the effort i think :y.

Spirited driving? Sounds like an excuse to "bed mine in" again. Will try a different route this time. Last time I hit a village at the wrong time and I think the locals were troubled by the smoke. ::)

Wheres Andy B?   ::)

never known this to work for more than a week. Brakes are no place for copper slip imho. Guarantee you'll never find it "factory fitted"...however you will find no problem with oe pads (jurid) which have no leading or trailing edge shamfer, limited dust and better feel/bite...

try swapping the pads to the other side, either inboard to outboard or wheel to wheel, trade club pads used to be marked directional, and iirc have 1 shimed pad per caliper, try juggling the combinations ie both shimmed pads on the sqeaky side, or add your own shim material, they are only stuck on with double sided tape on the trade club pads, oe are rivetted see below, trade pair club at the top, 4 oe at the bottom

also note the oe pads shims extend round the edge of the metal pad backing to prevent the caliper touch the pad and resonating

shame oe pads are almost 70 bloody quid... >:(

to op, try swapping the pads around... ;) also maybe something jammed in there as said.

My old mk4 cortina (going back a few years) used to squeal like a stuck pig, tried everything! Had new pads, discs, copper slipped everywhere and new anti-squeal shims and still never cured the noise. Then spoke to an old school ford mechanic who suggested cutting a couple of extra slots in the pad with a hacksaw, cured it completely. Aparently it's a way for the dust to escape rather than getting trapped between the pads and discs. Those were old asbestos pads though so not sure it would work on the newer asbestos free pads.

Still! I've never had problems with squealing brakes inspite of me always giving the backs of the pads & all metal to metal contact sliding points a smear of copper grease1  :y  :y  :y

Kev and OP, just a thought but are the sliders free enough, if one is sticking a little then maybe one side is of the pads is doing more work and maybe still just touching the disc after use.

Also if you can, come pare pad thickness with a vernier caliper or even a micrometer and put the tinner one (if there is a difference) back on the noisy side.

Is there a noticable difference in MPG, as this may indicate what I mention above.

I agree, never use copper slip on brakes....

And the 'golden pads' even at £70 are the best thing since sliced bread...

The brakes still have that nice feel at the beginning of the pedal but the bite when you push a bit harder are so much better than the other pads and they don't have that wooden feeling..
