Easiest check is for leaks. Get some Gunk (or similar engine degreaser) and clean the hell out of the engine bay or get it steam cleaned. Check for any obvious leaks and check your spark plug wells for oil aswell. The MPG will depend on whether auto or manual and how heavy your 'loud pedal' foot is. 25mpg isn't bad for a 2.2 round town though.

My 2.2 CDX auto estate only manages 25 mpg around town but my old 2.0 GLS auto estate averaged 29 mpg around town, that must be the price of progress, though I must say the the newer car does feel a lot more lively!

The oil consumption does seem excessive, the level hardly moves on mine over 3000 miles despite a mileage of 96,000, you must have a serious leak unless the valve seals are shot (which I would have thought is highly unlikely).

I had an old CVH Ford Sierra which were famous for leaking valve seals, replacing those was dead easy and cured the oil consumption problem.
