What gearbox has my car got?
« on: 11 August 2009, 08:37:07 »

Apparently during 1999 there was a model change WRT the 2.5TD Auto lumps and with this a change in what gearbox was fitted. So instead of the piss poor AR25 they fitted the more robust AR35 units.

How do I go about finding this info? Vauxhall as always are no use whatsoever.

epc details the gearbox type on reg lookup, but seems only to be as far as auto / manual  :-/

so, think its find the id plate on the box time.

Oh well, I'll be getting dirty tonight anyway as it's due an oil change. Fingers crossed.

Nothing wrong with the box, it was designed to withstand a certian amount of torque, to keep costs down you don't need ultra strong boxes in cars that don't have the torque for it.

Granted the AR35 should have been fitted to the 2.5TD, but it was detuned, as BMW did not want the same performace in a Vaxuhall! So the AR25 was seen as enough.

BMW make a habit of that, they detuned the 2litre unit they foisted onto Rover for the 75.

I had one of the first Rover 75 - BMW 2.0 Manual Diesels it was great on fuel but was very very dangerous on 'A' roads if you needed to overtake.
On holiday in France, real problems, just no power in any gear.
Sorry back to Omega's, chipped BMW 2.5 auto diesels with the AR25 will not last very long due to the increase of torque.

All Vauxhall 2.5TDs left the factory with AR25.  Any rumours to the contrary are incorrect.

Later Opel 2.5TDs used the Y25DT (in the UK we had the less desirable 2.2DTi) which was married up to the 5 speed auto...
