AT a loose end for 5 minutes at work so paperclipped the tractor...

49      Glow Device General Error
64      Fuel Quantity Control Out of Range
88      Air Mass Flow Sensor Voltage High
96      Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve Out Of Range

Now the 88 is an easy one..... it's unplugged The fillament is completely missing at it crawls along if it's plugged in.

Are any of the other codes enough to cause me a worry?

49 sounds like knackerd glow plug / plugs
96 egr block it off
and 64 sounds as if your not getting enough fuel, Pump ar filter maybe?

It's due a service so I'll do the glow plugs and fuel filters at the same time. Does it mean the EGR is knackered or would a good clean help do you think?

Dont think you can clean the egr. :-/
Might be the gasket to the pleunum from egr is knackered but I believe others just block them off, you might get a few better answers a little later.

Hello lee,you can get the blanking plates from vx dealers for about £2.50 IIRC,as i did mine on my vec,also the plungers in these things tend to stick from time to time,normally a good clout sorts em out,just speaking from past experience.

From experience, this code generally refers to the injection pump itself - damn expensive, believe me!
However, I'd start by filling a new fuel filter with Diesel Magic. Then remove the charge air pipe, (embossed 'turbo diesel'), and give it a damn good clean out. See where you go from there.

As an aside, I've come across several tractors that are running superbly with '64' apparent.

Mine goes great (apart from the MAF issue which just makes it a bit sluggish until the turbo kicks in) never had a problem with it. I had the charge air pipe off yesterday to get at something else and it is quite oily so it'll get a clean when I service. I was planning on doing the diesel magic trick at the same time anyway Thanks folks.

I think the code 64 was once a sign of impending doom, but it has been showing on my car for about 2 years and I have never managed to clear it... Cars runs sweet as though  :-/

Wouldn't worry  about it too much as long as the motor is serviced and looked after - which it sounds like it is
