how can i tell if its..........
« on: 13 August 2009, 14:26:23 »

...overheating? are there any tell tale signs that its over heating? due to my temp guage not working and recently having the HG done im just a bit worried at the moment that i cant tell if its getting too hot  :-/
So i was just wondering if there are signs that point to overheating i could look out for.

Easy enough on a 4 pot, there's hardly any engine to make a noise to drown the sound of the fans out ;D ;D

lol hey now come on! no jokes about it being just a 2.2  ;D the fans do cut in and spin pretty fast, but they only stay on for about 30seconds to a minute before cutting back out again, im guessing that means they aint cutting in when the car is way too hot?

Seriously Jimbob is right as you will soon know if your engine is overheating!!

From what you are saying it is not.  Any doubts and have the garage change the themostate whilst the engine is apart (just realised the engine has been done!)  8-) 8-) 8-) ;) ;)  Sorting out the gauge would be helpful as well!! :D :D ;) ;)

i actually have a new thermosat on it, as it was replaced when the HG was done last week, but since i got the car back the temp guage on the dash hasnt shown any reading, i THINK i found the lose connector at the rear for the engine but i just cant find where it goes , as its impossible to see where it should go and ive given up looking as my arms and hands cant take anymore cuts and burning  ;D

Might be easier to locate if you remove wipers and scuttle and use a mirror :y

My advise is then to take the car back to the garage and get them to sort the guage out; I take it you were charged for it. ;) ;) ;)

Have you tried looking from underneath?

IIRC, you can reach that connector reasonably easily  by reaching round one side of the bellhousing.

nope not tried from underneath, will give that a try tonight  :y didnt think of that!  ::) i gave the guy that did my HG a call and hes on about taking the engine off its mounts to just put this clip back on, which to me sounds a bit over the top. Since a non functioning temp guage isnt an MOT failure ( well i hope its not anyway) id rather just leave it as it is if its going to cost me more time and money

If it's not working after the garage did the HG it shouldn't cost you anything, but in general what's cheaper? sorting the temp gauge or repairing a cooked engine?

I found my spare sender last night, and photographed it for you with a connector (not the connector, just one that fits in the same manner) slid on; just in case you couldn't 'picture' it:

I added a note about the thread for the benefit of anyone changing one.
