Elite 2.5TD Auto Est - Couple of annoying probs
« on: 15 August 2009, 18:47:23 »

Hi all

I have a 1998 2.5TD Elite auto est. I have owned it from new (co car then bought it end of lease). It has been a great car and have decided to spend reasonable money to keep it going as long as possible (I just love it).

Just forked out to have front discs and pads replaced along with engine mountings. Drives lovely but two irritations remain.

Dreadful rattle from under bonnet/passenger bulkhead, Had it for years but has reached points of total distraction. New engine mounts helped but not the final fix for sure. It mainly occurs at tickover/idle speeds. Anyone else had similar?

I think the idle may be a little low at 550 revs. 50 more would eliminate most of the rattle but I think this is all EMS controlled isn't it?

Other problem is warm starting which when I had similar before was down to replacing glowplugs. Is this a reasonable task for DIY or mech only?

Cheers! Appreciate any replys.

Just spotted all the previous replies to my idle speed question so sorry for asking twice.

Glow plug change question is still relevant though.

Thanks!

Warm-start problem is quite common on the 2.5TDs, and certain Range Rover models fitted with this BMW lump.
There's an aftermarket device available which does some electronic trickery - send a 'PM' to Turk, he has a link to the suppliers.

Now glow-plugs .......
They're not activated on warm-starts, so I'd not bother changing them, especially if it starts well from cold.

One thing that you could try, is to change the fuel filter. Fill the replacement filter with Comma Diesel Magic before fitting.
Many OOFers have had good results with this method.

Lastly, what's your battery's condition? It needs to be 110% on a tractor, and model-specific!

Thanks!

I will contact him. Hadn't thought about the fact it couldn't be gps for warm start etc. Makes perfect sense and cold start is spot on.

Battery is less than a year old and bought from GM main dealer.

Cheers for the pointers!

Only last week did I buy one of these gadgets off ebay, easy to fit and it works. Do a search for "bmw hot starting fix", £29.95 + £2.50 postage (or  thereabouts). Can recommend this as better than getting pump reconned. The problem had got to me for weeks, changed battery (did help a bit), changed glow plugs (didn't need to), changed temp sensor (also didn't need to) and changed crank sensor (again didn't need to). Should have bought this gadget first, would of saved me £££££s.
