Anyone in East Anglia good with the V6 cambelt?
« on: 13 August 2009, 17:49:47 »

Hi all,
My cambelt kit arrived in the post yesterday and its waiting to go on the car. Only thing is I'm not to clued up on how to do it right nor do I have the special cam tools and from all the horror storries I hear I daren't attemp it without assistance from someone more experienced. :-/ Is there anyone nearby who could lend a hand and some advice at some point? All travel expenses will be reimbursed, and drinks provided :)

Get yourself the DVD, and loan or buy a locking kit - follow the DVD to the letter and you won't go far wrong. :y

I've not done one myself but have been led to believe that with the DVD it's easy :y :y

I haven't got the time at help at the moment but if it can wait until October I may be able to assist, assuming I can lend my hands on a locking kit :y :y

Did one myself by following the DVD - having never done any mechanical work on my car at all (it was the first job I did!).

Autovaux will rent you the cam locking kit, and I can probably find some time to help out... my missus could do with visiting  her mates in Norfolk anyway.

hi pete, you will need torx sockets, hex sockets, torque wrench, allen keys, large cranked ring spanner (to fit the excentic cam(s) in your kit). once you see it its a lot better. the only engine i had to do before in the same league was a 3.0 24v redtop cam chain replacement. just a video from autobahnstormers and drawings on the garage wall as i took it apart. the v6 belt is an easier job(touch wood it hasnt distroyed itself yet) and costs about 1/4 as much. get the dvd(i did it without, and when i took the front off thought, oh sh@t :o),well at least it looks like the picture in the written instructions. watch it 2-3 times before you start(i did this with the video for the redtop) and when you take the front off it will be a case of... ah, old friend ive seen you before! helps to have a mate with you, even one with no experience, to watch the dvd and if you miss something he might pick the mistake up. 4 eyes and two brains are better than 2 eyes and one brain.

Ok I will invest in the DVD as it seems to be highly reccomended. Its just I have taken it all apart (the easy bit  ;D ) and it looks pretty complex and scary :o
You all know how it is, once you've done a job once its so much easier the second time, which is why an experinced hand would be reassuring here.
I'll have a look at buying or renting a locking kit, although as I'll probably (and hopefully!) only need it once the purchase cost seems a little steep. Not really decided on what to do yet but thanks for the advice. Will keep you updated :y

Ok thanks for that, I'll have a look on autovaux, see what they offer. If you're gonna be in the area it would be great to have someone who has the faintest idea what they're doing to hand! ;D

It would be no problem, and the missus wants to do a visit to her friends so the next couple of weekends might work (i need to check with her what we are doing, I can never remember!). From memory, Autovaux charge £100 deposit and £15 a week rental.

Good news, I have managed to locate a locking kit nearby, but hit me up if you happen to be in my area at any point soon, just for some advice and a quick underbonnet comparisson to make sure I have put things back right and havent forgotten anything that would be awsome :)
Thanks for all the advice. :y
