Reading the Oil Dip-Stick, and, Oil Level Warning
« on: 16 August 2009, 20:58:02 »

When reading the dip-stick (2.6 2001) where on the "ridges"
would you read to be MAX/MIN ?
right up/down to the little square things or top/bottom
RAISED bits or . . . .?
ALSO, while i (think) i'm seeing the oil quite clearly on the
ridged side, it looks like there is only splashes on the back bit
like it hasn't been dipped inthe oil at ALL ??? (or is it running
off immediately because of the material ??

AND, where on the LEVEL on the Dip-Stick should the Oil
Level Warning come on ? right down bottom , part way up ?
I think mine's warning about 1/3rd up the ridges
(or 2/3rds down ??) seemed to take less than a Litre
from the Warning coming on to fill to just over the MAX ??

Sorry FatS, I think you need to post a pic. I have only ever had dipsticks with MAX/MIN/ADD OIL. Never seen one with dates, raised areas, ridges, little square things, or material where the oil runs straigt off. I have two marks on mine, and it takes exactly one litre to go from the bottom mark to the top. If you keep it topped up to the FULL mark, you will not get warnings, or starve the engine of oil.

If you're fully or reasonably topped up with oil ,then it could well be the oil level sensor playing up.

Until yesterday I had a 1994 2.5 V6 with a nice simple flat metal dip stick with MAX/MIN/ADD OIL. I used to try not to let it drop below half way between the max and min because in hilly areas (like Cornwall ::) ) the CHECK OIL or worse OIL LACK would be triggered going up the steeper hills.

Yesterday I picked up a 2003 2.6 V6 with a wire dipstick and the knobbly lump on the end. The CHECK OIL message came up after climbing from Exeter up onto Dartmoor. When I checked the level it was just on the low step.

See page 200 in the users manual for a diagram.

I had the oil level low light come on on the drive home from collecting my car. Frightened the hell out of me!

Let the level settle down for 15 mins and them measured - it was halfway between min & max on the dipstick and took less than half a litre to fill up/
