Ok im back with another daft question what size is the oil filter nut the one on the end of the filter housing ive normally used large adjustable spanners to undo it but i got the oil done in a garage last time and the thing is too tight so id rather use a large socket to undo it as knowing my luck id break it with me big adjustable

Sounds like they've overtightened it. A common problem. Can't remember the size of the socket but you're doing the right thing as the cap can be cracked if a socket is not used.

There is a torque setting marked on the cap for reassembly. 15Nm IIRC. It really just needs to be hand tight plus a little "nip".

I personally use a 3/8ths socket drive shaft that fits nicely inside the 'nut' and just undoes or tightens the filter housing without any undue pressure being applied

I do this too, and I'd say it's OK if it hasn't been overtightened but in this case I'd say use a large socket as the 3/8 square hole in the cap won't take much torque before it cracks.

Thats what i thought but ive gone through al my sockets and i aint got one to fit so if anyone knows the size i can go out and buy one

Happened to me mate a few weeks back when i did my oil change,the prat who obviously tightened it last got a bit exited with the wrench,so when i tried to get it off,i ended up cracking the thing,and so it cost me £20 from vx.Cant remember what size socket it was though. :-/

If memory serves; it's 22mm accross flats. Best to use a six sided socket.

With mine I have measured it to 22.5mm - very awkward!!

Don't think Vauxhall would have used a 22.5mm, as this is not a common size. In actual fact the size is more likely to be 24mm, as a 15/16AF also fits. [smiley=wink.gif]

im going to do this in a week or so, hope it aint to tight and nice to know about the 3/8s bit to retighten. i like the idea of the conversion to standard filter, any drawbacks? that outbalance the easier to fit easier to get bit etc

Conventional filters are slightly cheaper, bizarrely.

However, Once you've got over the initial problem of a gibbon having done the cap up last time, they are no problem at all IMHO. Easier then a cartridge filter in some ways because you can just get a ratchet one them and remove. No messing around with strap wrenches, etc. when they're tight.

it is 24mm from memory. Don't be tempted to use a 3/8 drive wrench in the cap, it will break if its been over titghtend

I agree entirely, but believe me or not neither a 22mm or a 23mm fits mine!!  That is one reason why I use a 3/8ths drive of a socket set

Hi,
You need a 24 mm socket or ring.

If you have a selection of "old money" sockets or ring spanners then 15/16" is a perfect fit.
I have a 15/16 ratcheting ring spanner, perfect for the job.

I agree with all the others, that unless it was YOU that originally tightened the cap up to the correct torque, then dont go down the road of the 3/8" ratchet.

spot on got loads of old money ones, i used one for the cambelt excentric cam, old spanners eh worth their weight in gold, i never throw one away, that might be why im surrounded by them... have nightmares about them closing in... often hide in a cupboard from them, but these are my issues, that im doing my best to avoid dealing with!
