MV6 Cambelt

Hello,

It's time for replace my cambelt and I've seen the 3302 laser one. Does anyone ever use it? If so, what do you think about it?

I have a pair of cam locks http://www.lasertools.co.uk/item.aspx?cat=313&item=1705 (left) and http://www.lasertools.co.uk/item.aspx?cat=313&item=1704 (right).

Work fine for me.

Two questions I have are
1. If the international colour for port (left) is red and starboard (right) is green why are these tools coloured green for left and red for right  >:(
2. What are all the other bits in the full kit for?

the other parts in kit are
-crank locking tool
-dont know rihgt name for other tool but is for set up  camshafts to right position
- belt holder

You need the full kit to do a V6 properly

Is it a C spanner for turning the camshafts? I could have done with one of those when I refitted the cylinder heads  ::)

You should have one if you have a V6 Cam Locking Kit mate :y

I don't have a kit, I just have the cam locks.

I have changed the belt 3 times and driven 76,000 miles so I cannot be doing too much wrong. It seems to me that the cam locks are essential but the rest of the kit is 'nice to have'.

PS I have the 2.5. If the 2.6 has a different tensioner arrangement then I might think differently ;)

To the op, not used a lazer locking kit, but not impressed with their tools in general tbh. However i would be very suprised if it didnt do the job for the 3 or 4 times youll need it in the cars life, provided its correct for your engine of course.

Oops sorry, forgot where this thread started.

The Laser 3302 kit - the cam locks work fine (but I don't like the colours) ::) I can't comment usefully about the rest of the kit.......

Without setting the timing correctly (you can with just the cam locks) you risk

a) Running the two banks out of time with each other resulting in uneven distribution of power.

b) You are not able to correctly set belt tension (which in a static setup is dependent on cam position)

c) Your unable to get optimum power and economy from the engine

The question I always ask.....do you really think that a volume engine production setup would add extra costly steps to the engine assembly process if they were not required?

Or do you know more than the highly skilled design engineer who spent 5 years working on the design of the power plant in the first place  :y

i've just got in a sealey VSE130 locking kit and can do them for £85.00 + VAT if anyones interested

There were some issues a year or more ago with Laser kits that simply didn't fit due to a casting problem.

I have one from this era and, while it does the job, it's not a great quality kit. Everything fits either too tight or a bit sloppy.

If I had my time again, I would be on the phone to andyc at this moment.  :y
