Air leaks can cause popping as the air/fuel mix varies, either when being drawn into the engine or sometimes, in the exhaust.  Exhaust is generally on the over-run when air is drawn into the exhaust system from a leaking joint/rust hole and the unburnt overich mix burns, giving the popping, if you follow.

i agree with hotel, exhaust will make the noise, but if yours is ok, manifold gaskets can make a noise like very bad tappets and can cause popping, how suprised was i when i found that one, some years ago on a car, any codes in the computer?
