Has any one bought one of the 5 pound ebay chips

My mate bought one and it was a little resistor to short out the air flow meter?

  bout 30p's worth! surly a paper clip is cheeper!!

Would this actually be a gain to the car?

Beleive they make the car run better for a couple of miles, then the ecu relearns and gain is gone.
Think at this point they can even have negative impact

They make the ECU "think" the air coming in is colder.. this implies a higher mass of air, so requires more fuel ... thus the ECU gives a bit extra fuel than needed so giving slightly more power.. and worse fuel economy as the car now runs rich all the time

The chips sold to improve economy work in the other direction, fooling the ECU to run lean all the time ...

Neither do the engine any good long term

do not chance it .my friend bought one for his msd veccy but never fitted it as hs friend fitted one to his car then blew his engine

Total rubbish... Even at 5 quid they're a rip off. The resistor inside is a couple of pence!

From the "an engine is a bonfire" school of tuning. (Pour more fuel in and it's bound to generate more power).

I tried one a few years ago & the EML came on after a couple of seconds, took it straight back off...

They would have more effect on the coolant sensor...........still a BAD idea though.

Note that the effect of buggering with air temp sensing has a VERY small imapct (this sensor was actualy removed on the later 2.6/3.2 V6 power plants)

If it's going to the MAF... it will full the ECU into thinking more air is coming in... so you will get more fuel... and a very rich mixture... I wonder what the cats will think about this?

as the maff effectivity measures temp (indirectly) anyway.

agree, should go on cts for best effect, but ultimately pointless.

The mixture goes quite rich at full throttle anyway, and they just temporarily stop working as effectively. During cruise, the closed loop control will bring the mixture back under control, so the "chip" won't affect mixture, unless it takes the fuel out of the adjustment limits allowed, in which case you'll get an EML.

The ECU might give you a little more ignition advance if it's fooled into thinking the air's colder, but as has been said, it'll be a minimal adjustment.

At the end of the day, VX have spent a lot of hours setting up the engine management, so the likelihood of improving it in this way is slim. Granted, there are probably some compromises in the factory setup to get the emissions right, and to guarantee that it doesn't grenade under the most arduous conditions, but the only way to get an improvement, and a small one at that, is a properly developed chip.
