Oh Cock! Gearbox in a million bits. Urgent!!!
« on: 19 August 2009, 15:13:46 »

So I was just performing the tasks of swapping TC's and Bell Housing Covers so that the AR35 can be utilised on my vehicle when my whinging weakling of an assistant managed to drop and half catch it.

As it had no bellhousing on the front has come loose and so all the gubbins inside have realigned themselves somewhat.

How the hell am I going to solve this one? Never done gearbox internals so I have no idea what I am looking at.

That gearbox shop in Kettering says they are unable to help. :(

First thing to do is carefully to support it upright, bellhousing end uppermost. Strap it to your workbench or something.

Do a search on here for Thrust washer replacement in the guides section. There are some photos on there of the gizzards.

Second can you post a photo or two?.

I took out all of the bolts on the bellhousing so I guess the unit that is now loose which has all the plates on display etc and the intermeshed gearing at the back is the oil pump?

This is the guide referred to: http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1183142571

Warns not to remove the inner bolts but to loosen them. Then again, that's for removing the pump and bell housing together.  :-/

Customer announcement: Sassanach to the forum please!  ;)

Yeah, never meant for the oil pump thing to come out. It should have 'simply' been a swap bellhousing over job.

So I basically have the whole unit in my hands with all the little plates etc round the middle of it.

looking at that i would have thought it would go back in o,k as it appears to have come out as one unit, the big metal plate that you should have will only go back on one way due to the bolt holes so no worries there, i never had that happen myself so i cant comment further but good luck :y

i was thinking of asking if anyone had an old box to take apart just to see whats in there and, hopefully, sus out how it works....maybe....
But looks like you've done half the job already.

In the absence of any other suggestions....
That looks like the inside of a planet gear on the bottom of the pic? And the plates with tabs on the outside edge look like they should line up with similar shaped grooves on the other half of the box.
If that is the order the parts came out(as one lump) then i would be tempted to remove(first noting their current order/whichway up) and fit the tabed plates in first and arrange them so they line up if needed, then lower the main lump in pic as is through the plates and hope the planet gears line up with a wiggle/jiggle to get all four(?)gears to drop in.
Can you post a pic of the other half, looking in to where it should fit?
Is that the correct order or are they mixed up in any way?

That's how it came out, dislodged it so that it jutted out. I didn't want to go and use Brute Force and Ignorance on it so lifted it a bit further and now I find the mess I am in now.

Been there, tried that. Learnt more about the mind of the bloke who must have sat down and designed it than the box itself. :o

What do you reckon ? Genius or phsycho? :-)
def needs to brush up on his thrust washesrs tho.

I always imagined a serious development process of trial and error to start with and general refinements over the years. Couldnt come up with that from scratch surely. Is there a "family tree" of related boxs?
Have seen a test box to actuate the solenoids, and air line tests for leaking valves, valve body related mostly, Love to take one to bits, might not bother putting one back together though i suspect.

Any luck with that pic of the orifice spearmint?

Hey guys, thanks for any advice so far.

I've taken the step of giving it into a specialist in Peterborough. He picked up on it needing a new gasket as it was all crumbling away so just as well what happened, happened. Main thing is once he has the gasket it'll take him about 30 mins to have it back together so thank fook for that. :)
