3.0 to 3.2 upgrade
« on: 09 September 2009, 22:39:42 »

As the title really, I have a 3.0 fitted to an R28 box, the engine is being controled by a Bosch Motronic 2.8.1 ecu. If I wanted to fit the 3.2 will the gearbox still fit, I'm also guessing I'll need a different ecu?

Is the 3.2 a stronger engine, as in can it be safely supercharged? I think it would be asking a lot of the X30XE I currently have fitted.

If the answer to the above is yes, how much power gain would I be looking at, and would the R28 box cope? Can the ecu be remapped to accept the extra boost from the supercharger or do I need to look into a different one?

Remember this engine /  box combination is not fitted to an Omega! I scrapped an MOT failed ex-police MV6 estate to get all the parts needed.  This car is already really very rapid, as it only weighs 1200kg.

It will be in next months Practical Performance Car magazine coming out on the 24th of September.

Cheers

The 3.2 has a stronger crank and better exhaust manifolds than the 3.0 so would be better for supercharging. I don't know if the ECU could be remapped but I know when fitting a supercharger to an MX5 they have a piggy back ECU which works with the existing one. The other problem with the V6 is cooling to the rear cylinders, I know this was a problem with turbo charging but not sure about supercharging. Love the car by the way, bet it goes well :y

The 3.2 has a drive-by-wire throttle and coil-per-plug ignition in the Omega, so you'd probably be better off retaining the 2.8.1. management and the manual throttle for simplicity.

The 3.2 does have a forged crank and better exhaust manifolds, as said, but it's lower compression than the 3.0 so I wouldn't expect much difference in performance as a natasp engine. If you're going to blow it you'll probably be taking the compression down anyway, I guess.

Other than that, it should be a bolt-in replacement AFAIK.

If I were to go that route I'd ditch the motronic system altogether and use a mappable ECU rather than piggy-back boxes, etc. Something like a Megasquirt or an Emerald will do a much better job.

As standard, the 3.2 comes with motronic 3.1.1 which is pretty different to the 2.8.x as Kevin Wood says above.  Not sure if using 2.8.x ecu would be ideal due to different characteristics, and reworking what you've done for 3.1.1 is a lot of work.  That said, if turbo/supercharging, probably need remapping pretty drastically anyway.

Kevin Wood's suggestion of a programmable off-the-shelf ecu does probably sound like the best bet, assuming you have the understanding to get the best from such a system

Good luck :y

some one off VVOC attempted supercharging a Y32 3.2 Vectra C the conrods cant take much so he was only running like 1bar boost

better bet is the Saab/GM 2.8V6 that engine can take alot of boost!

Dont know how much power an R28 can handle but after 150k mi my R28 was abit knackered ie made funny noises in reverse and the syncro was weak on 2nd & 3rd

Megasquirt systems etc are your best bet for remapping like someone wlse has already sugested

What is this engine, and will it mate to an R28?

its out of the Latest Vectra C The VXR uses it and the plod Vectra V6 Turbos use it aswell i expect if you found one it'd be quite expensive!

dont know if the R28 would mount to it as its FWD but you can make a 3.0 V6 go in a Vectra B using an F2 3/5 /6 gearbox so i would hazard a guess that it mite
