.....throw away a month thats left on an MOT if you thought, if you took it early it would have more chance of passing than if you left it until it run out? im just worried if i leave it until the end of october to get the MOT done the oil leak i have will be bad enough to make it fail, but at the moment the leak isnt too bad so maybe its got more chance of passing  :-/ :-/

you can have it tested a month before it runs out anyway...

test now in my book, even if it fails, providing not a 'dangerous' fail, you can use it till the old one expires if needs be.

you planning on fixing the leak?

at the moment i cant afford to get the leak sorted, in the last month ive spent £1100 on the car    so im thinking ...MOT now, if it passes fine save up some cash get it fixed, if it fails, sell it on or part ex it ( but with one month still on the old MOT)

I guess the fail will be recorded at http://www.motinfo.gov.uk/
so the new owner would know it had failed.....

well thats the thing i am worried its a bit dishonest selling it on if it fails  but even if it fails now i guess it still gives me a month of saving up the cash to get it sorted for when the MOT does expire. Just to make sure though, so i put it in for the MOT now and it fails, i CAN still drive it until the expiry date of my current MOT they wouldnt say its invalid?

they can issues a big fail, which stops the car being driven, but fine to drive while a mot is in force.

stupid in my mind, the latest should override old ones, but thats not how it works 

so I now try and MOT a month early, leaving plenty of fettling time should it be needed

oh wait one quick other thing.....last time this car hasd its MOT it failed on the emissions test ( £400 worth of exhuast and some redex sorted it that time) but if it failed on that again  would it be enough for them to say my old MOT is now invalid?

nah, gotta be very bad, NO brakes kind of think afaik.

I beleive its very unusual to demand on site fix / trailer away, but can happen.

If its just the oil leak your worried about dont because it cant be failed on it it can even be classed as dangerous but its not a fail.
As for the legality of driving the old mot will still be valid so you cant get done for that but if it fails you could get done for  driving a vehicle that is unroadworthy(unlikly but you never know)

If the tester thinks it is unroadworthy, he will slap a red sticker on the screen, that makes it off the road, meaning your old MOT is void. That is only for a DANGEROUS vehicle though.

I always thought the tester could fail it on a serious oil leak due to risk of fire but its rare to have one tht bad

If the tester thinks it is unroadworthy, he will slap a red sticker on the screen, that makes it off the road, meaning your old MOT is void. That is only for a DANGEROUS vehicle though.

We can only fail it and mark it down as dangerous but we cant void the current mot or stop the vehicle from being driven away. Normal testers dont have powers to to put proabition on cars (wish we did).
