Hot engine
climate set to lets say 25
ignition "off"
press auto
should the heater work
may i add the heating / air con has no problems at all whilst the car is running ...but the way i read it climate control should work with the engine off as long as there is enough heat in the system
or im i missing somthing here ?

thats right it does work when you turn the ignition off it keeps the car warm in winter and cool in summer it will turn itself off

It should theoretically work with the way you describe it. I just tested mine that way, and it works fine for me with climate. And quoting the VX handbook:

"Residual heat  system
When the vehicle  is  stopped and the  ignition
off , the heat still in the cooling system can be
used to heat the passenger compartment, for
example when stopped at a rail crossing.
Press AUTO with the ignition off. AUTO and
the preselected temperatures appear on the
display.
The residual heat  system  switches off
automatically when the heat  stored  in the
cooling system is no  longer sufficient  to heat
the passenger compartment.
To deactivate,  switch on the  ignition or press
OFF".

I would suggest resetting the Climate Control and to try again. To reset the Climate Control, follow the below procedure:

If the electronic air conditioning system is not
functioning  in the usual manner: press the
AUTO and OFF buttons simultaneously for
approx. 5 seconds. The servomotors will be
synchronized, during which  time the fan will
temporarily switch off.

Ignition of set to auto all that stuff presed off on auto every other button on the dash tried reset .........................still bugger all checked all the fuses
anybody any idea where i should be looking for the fault cos i sure aint

Well, it's done with the car running and the a/c or heater on if i'm not wrong. Try giving that a go and see how it works

Prefacelift

Not all prefacelifts have the facility.  I'd need to check, but think you need the 'Winter Pack' and a mod on the climate
