DIWhy is it so difficult?!? (sob)
« on: 19 September 2009, 19:28:07 »

Today's task was to service the rear brakes and sort the handbrake adjustment out as it's getting a touch high. All week I've been reading through MDTM's "how to" and getting everything prepared, this morning I started work with a skip in my step and gleam in my eye.

Then it all went wrong  >:(

Problems that I have:

1) I sheared one of the bolts off whilst trying to remove one of the heatshield retaining nuts - How easy are these to replace?

2) Having sheared off one bolt, should I give up quickly as all the other nuts look in a similar state of corrosion - and just borrow a long extension to reach the handbrakecable adjuster?

3) Having given up on the rear brakes I thought I would fit a new backbox. Regular applications of penetrating fluid over the course of a couple of hours ensured things looked ready, but all four of the nuts were seized solid and just sheared off anyway (Bit of a theme running here) - However the pipes won't shift apart so now I am completely stuck - Any ideas how to get the two apart as I really don't want to cause any damage.  :o

The only constructive thing I managed to do today was fit a new fuel filter. Still at least it's progress  :-/

Any thoughts on my issues?

I was considering that earlier. However, all I have is a heat gun for stripping paint and I don't know how good that might be for expanding the outer pipe.

There is allso WD40 say's what it dose on the tin, p.s u can riviet it back on as other way u have to take out the seat etc take a long time and u have to drill out the old bolts, riviet it back on only take a few min's, if u have trouble undoing the the nuts tighten it up a bit put WD40 on it then undo then tighten nut slowly not fast (NOT FAST) should un do then withowt snaping it.  Use rubber hammer to seperate them its well rusted init,:y

before even attempting to adjust the handbrake cable you should have adjusted the hanbrake shoes!!! have you done that?

Waste of time. WD40 is NOT a penetrating oil. Use something like "Plusgas" far, far superior :y

Heatshield is no problem, self tappers will sort that. As someone said, you should do the brake shoes first, then adjust cable. I have had some success with a hot air paint stripper, but you really need concentrated heat from a torch. Consider going to an exhaust centre before you get committed.

I did think about just cracking on with the brakes anyway, but decided to do the fuel filter and exhaust first. Should have sorted all the shoes and pads in hindsight.  :'(
