Going back a little while, I looked at an Omega V6 which was poorly.

The symptoms were, header tank full of sludge and running hot. The oil level was also dropping.

As is pretty much always the case - we both suspected oil cooler failure.

The cooler was replaced with a gen GM one.

Some time has gone by, and He's just noticed, that the oil level has dropped, and the header tank is again full of sludge.

I would have thought, due to the layout of the oil/waterways, this wouldn't be likely to be a head gasket failure, on a V6? Especially a 2.6 with multi layer steel gaskets...?

Unless of course it's overheated, in a past life.. and badly warped the surfaces.

Any ideas? Anyone ever had a tank full of sludge on a V6, and it's been head gasket?


Or - is it more likely to be a pocket of sluge in the rad that's moved to the tank, with the requirement for an oil-topup being a red-herring?

Maybe just more flushing is required? (My instinct).

2 ideas immediately spring to mind....

1, the not enough flushing youve already suggested.

2, the new cooler is faulty

forte biodegreaser or similar have got to be the 1st port of call, and give a bloody good flush......


If that fails, then investigate further.

If its a 2.6 the oil level issue could be valve stem oil seals. I would suggest lots more flushing of the coolant system

Oil level = valve stem seals - bet it is 2001
