Just done my rocker cover gaskets, breathers etc., so next job is cambelt, water pump. Car is 1999 2.5V6 petrol

I have acquired a AST4145 Cam locking kit.
So left with:

1) I need to know if I really need the special 30mmm spanner that is extra to this kit,

or can I use a normal 30mm ring spanner?

2) Water pump. Looking at QH or AP Lockheed. any advice on make/quality?

3)Is the "Gates" cambelt kit any good? or are there  any good alternatives

Oh, and last, has anyone got a copy of instructions for the AST4145 cam locking kit they can scan and email?

If you already have an offset ring spanner, then that is perfectly OK to use. If you find a recent picture of the Pink Peril under the bonnet of a car doing a cam belt, you'll see he's using a combination spanner. It can be used, but is bl00dy difficult compared with an offset ring spanner.       

Can't say over 2 & 3 other than to say I didn't change thepump when I did my belt last - which was about 4 yrs 40000 miles ago!

Shame you bought the kit, I'm only in Brackley and have v6 lock kit...

Number 1, just buy a cheap offset ring spanner.
Number 2, personally would only buy genuine water pump.
Number 3 Gates kit I have used, and it was very good indeed.

I have a copy of the instructions here, they are a bit oily, I have scanned them and can email them to you if you pm me an email address.

I bought the locking kit as seemed worth getting. Always get something back if I sell it. Will deffo have to get the DVD before doing.
I'll go Gates cambelt kit as good price.
will have to investigate 30mm spanner options.

for the ring spanner to fit it needs a crank due to the nut being recessed in the idler wheel.

A normal ring spanner will not fit as the recess is too deep. But i have used an open ended spanner or adjustable at an angle of about 45 degrees to reach the nut, apply gentle pressure and still allow access through the centre to tighten/set it. Far from ideal but what do you do if caught with out?

Would try to acquire cranked ring spanner if poss. But very little leverage is required iirc.
